The world of MMA was left stunned as Sean Strickland dominated and stripped Israel Adesanya out of his championship belt at UFC 293. The 32-year-old fighter has recently won the middleweight championship and now is winning hearts. After the fight, ‘The Tarzan’ indulged in an after-fight interview where his words echoed something Tyson said years ago, ‘the belt means nothing.’ Strickland seemingly emotional, stated, “It means absolutely nothing and you realize it in 10 years 15 years I’m an old man. This means absolutely fu**ing nothing”

This was an uncanny resemblance to when Tyson, referring to the belts he won throughout his career stated, “This is garbage. I can say I bled for garbage, at one time, it meant a lot when you’re just a young kid. This is nothing. This is just nothing man.” This quickly prompted the fans to commend the champion, not before concluding that both men are legends.

Some of the comments read as follows:

  • Won the tittle with no Dana white privilege
  • Bro won the belt without sucking up to dana white
  • Dana really thought Sean was gona lose bro
  • Bro really doesnt care
  • It means you were the best in the world at what you do. The material belt itself is just memorializing and honoring that
  • The belt don’t make the man.. its easily forgotten material it dont make the man the man makes the title
  • It’s a fantastic accomplishment due to hard work, etc etc….but one cannot take the material when one is six feet under

Drawing parallels between Mike Tyson and Sean Strickland might not seem fair to many, given Tyson’s extensive career. Tyson grew up in a turbulent environment where he was involved in street gangs. He was later despatched to ‘Tryon School for Boys,’ a reform school in NY. His life took an effective flip when he was introduced to legendary trainer Cus D’Amato by a social worker. Under D’Amato’s guidance, Tyson became the youngest Heavyweight champion in boxing thus propelling his career as a legendary boxer.

Strickland’s upbringing also carries the horrors of violent childhood and substance abuse. Despite a loving mother, everything turned dark and violent quickly for him once his father indulged in substance abuse. However, much like Tyson, he found peace in the world of MMA. After getting caught for a hate crime and being dropped from his school in 9th grade, he was committed to an MMA gym by his mother in hopes of reform. A game changer for him, the interactions with diverse individuals in the gym proved to be therapeutic in walking away from his biases and ideologies.

From rough childhoods to their fair share of controversies, these two remarkable men carry around their awe-inspiring stories. Their lives are a living testimony to the possibility of overcoming difficult circumstances and achieving your dreams.
