Joe Rogan has repeatedly stated that he does not like to say anything bad about the fighters because of the immense respect he has for them. And admirable as that may be, he has a tendency to go too far the other way in praising fighters he likes.

His emotional declaration that Ronda Rousey would beat 50% of the men in the bantamweight division is a canon event in the MMA world. And Chael Sonnen thinks the podcast host has made another such wild mischaracterization about Conor McGregor‘s upcoming return to the UFC.

Sonnen said that he was very surprised to hear Rogan say that if anyone could come back successfully after a two-year gap, it would be McGregor. ‘Uncle Chael’ was so surprised that he told fans he wasn’t sure the UFC commentator actually said it.

“Joe Rogan was speaking about Conor McGregor just today. He was talking about the fact of Conor returning. Returning after not only 2 years off, but off a very serious injury. And Joe said if anybody can do it it’s him. And that was a very baffling statement by Joe to make… I don’t think Joe would have said it ‘if anyone could do it it’s him,’ I don’t think he said it,” the former UFC title contender said.

He pointed out that in order to say someone could do something successfully; they need to have a track record of doing it. He gave the example of Randy Couture coming back from retirement a second time at 47 after winning at 45 as someone people could say, if anybody could win the title at 47, it Couture.

“To say something like that you would have to have a history of doing something like that… It’s a very weird comment that I’m not confident was relayed to me correctly. Joe Rogan said if anybody can do this Conor McGregor why would it be Conor McGregor? What part of what you see within Conor McGregor lends you to believe he can flip a script?”

Sonnen was curious about what in ‘Mac’s character or track record led him to believe that McGregor could make an unlikely comeback despite the odds and expectations being against him. Sonnen and Rogan will have to wait to find out if McGregor can indeed “do it” as the uncertainty around the exact timeline of his return persists which many speculate is because the Irishman has not joined the USADA testing pool yet.
