Israel Adesanya and Dricus Du Plessis‘s back and forth over their African lineage could be setting the stage for a potential showdown in the near future. Du Plessis will have to get through Robert Whittaker at UFC 290 to earn his title shot but Adesanya is begging to be let off the leash against ‘Stillknocks.’ The South African native hit a nerve when he went after Adesanya’s African lineage a few months ago. The #6 ranked middleweight claimed he was more of an African than the likes of Adesanya, Kamaru Usman, and Francis Ngannou as he was an African who trained out of Africa, unlike the others.
The 29-year-old’s comments received a lot of backlash and got him the attention of the champion. Now, Adesanya is bent on putting Du Plessis in his place. However, he will have to wait to see the results of Du Plessis’ fight at UFC 290.
Meanwhile, ‘Stylebender’ gave him a piece of his mind during his recent appearance on ‘The MMA Hour.’ The 33-year-old sat down with Helwani for an hour-long chat that started off discussing Du Plessis and the ‘real African’ comments. Ariel Helwani started off the discussion by asking about a potential fight between Israel Adesanya and Dricus Du Plessis. The veteran analyst believed there was a good enough storyline for the fight to make sense.

Israel Adesanya on the ‘real African’ debate with Dricus Du Plessis
Adesanya said he asked Dana White to set up the fight for a July PPV but to no avail. Later, the champion addressed the comments from Du Plessis. Adesanya admitted that Du Plessis was an African, but went on to point out some cold hard facts about his lineage.
He said, “I’ll say this again. I never questioned his ethnicity. I never said he’s not African even though colonization, we don’t want to go over there, and all that stuff. He is an African. He was born over there and stuff and I never questioned that.”
The City Kickboxing star continued, “But the fact that he was being a di*khead and “who the real African is...” you know, “I breathe African air” and all that kind of stuff. I’m like ‘How the f*ck are you going to question me, Francis [Ngannou], and Kamaru [Usman]’s Blackness or African-ness?’ Like, ‘Who the f*ck are you?’ So I had to put that out there and I want to educate him.”

Du Plessis first got Adesanya’s attention after UFC 287. ‘Stylebender’ had reclaimed his title and issued a grim statement to his next target. “If he does work and I pray to god he keeps winning. I will gladly drag his carcass across South Africa,” said Adesanya without name-dropping Du Plessis.
The Adesanya-Du Plessis bad blood looks like it will only be settled inside the octagon. But can Du Plessis overcome Robert Whittaker on July 8? And what do you make of Adesanya’s comments here?
