Aljamain Sterling hates the idea of Israel Adesanya getting an instant rematch. He isn’t the only one who has expressed displeasure over the thought of ‘Izzy‘ getting to play again. Recently Dricus du Plessis also wanted Adesanya off the game plan for the long run.

Sterling has so far had two losses over the last couple of months. The last time he stepped into the octagon, ‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley knocked him out in the first minute of the second round. Losing the title means a lot to any fighter but should they get an immediate shot to get it back again? Fans have their opinions cast in stone.

The bigger part of the picture is that if the former champion gets the title match back, what about the other fighters? Adesanya has gotten an immediate rematch once in the past. Now, would it be a surprise if the same happens again? And if it does, ‘The Funk Master’ wants the same for himself.

“How do you [Adesanya] get it and I don’t? If the fans, Dana, whoever, if they can justify it to me, I’ll be like ‘Alright, I see your point.’ But I don’t see the point.” The New Yorker said on the Weekly Skraps podcast. Here’s how the fans responded on Facebook:

  • “Adesanya to dana’s eyes is gold,, business as usual”
  • You need to be a teacher’s pet funk master”
  • “He has a point adesanya was beat unanimously…”
  • “Thought it was we don’t care who gets the title shot as long as it’s merab or aljo? Make merab fight aljo, winner gets title shot.”
  • “What will he do differently facing a very dominant opponent. He’s shown his weakness and if he loses a rematch he’ll be doomed. Nevertheless a rematch won’t happen soon.”
  • “Izzy is a company guy, he’s easy to deal with, stays busy, doesn’t duck fights and draws big numbers. So he gets rewarded accordingly.”
  • “Neither one deserves it. Izzy is 4-3 in his last 7. He should be earning his title shot. Just like aljo should have to. Only time you should get an immediate rematch is if the fight is close or controversial.”

UFC fans are as miles apart as they can be about this. Some believe ‘Izzy’ being good business brings him the fights. Others have a higher sense of justice and don’t think either one of the two fighters deserves an instant shot. At a time like this, perhaps a neutral solution is best where both fighters wait a fair amount of time before a rematch.

Aljamain Sterling remains stern

The former bantamweight champion held a nine-win streak before O’Malley managed to wreck it like a wooden ship in a whirlpool. No wonder Sterling wants another chance to reclaim the title, but the truth is, he was defeated fair and square via knockout.

There were no controversies, no doubtful decisions, nor were there any mishaps that led to his loss. The same goes for Adesanya’s defeat against Sean Strickland. So truthfully, the only reason any fighter gets an instant rematch can’t be more than giving the people what they want. However, giving a rematch to either of these two so quickly is bound to cause an uproar among fans and fellow fighters. Should Dana White and Co. risk all of that? Let us know in the comments.
