Alistair Overeem has been one of the best heavyweights to never win UFC gold. At forty years of age, Overeem knows his time among the best fighters of the world may soon end. Therefore, his current run of four wins in his past five fights is probably his last chance to get a shot at UFC gold.
Overeem will enter the Octagon for his sixty-seventh professional fight this weekend against Alexander Volkov. The UFC heavyweight division isn’t exactly brimming with contenders. Therefore, with a win, Overeem will inch closer to the only title that is missing from his already studded collection.
Prior to landing in the UFC, Overeem held titles in Strikeforce, K-1, and Dream. If he wishes to add to the tally, he knows he’ll have to string together at least a couple more wins. If he loses, however, he may be staring at hanging his gloves. ‘The Demolition Man’ took to Twitter to reflect upon what is his last run at UFC gold.

I still love this sport, the training and everything about it. But I also have to be realistic: my time is coming to an end.

Irrespective of his record, Overeem has always been one of the most physically imposing fighters on the UFC roster. His tenure in the UFC began with a huge win over Brock Lesnar. However, he has never won over four fights in a row in the promotion. Regardless, what his numbers in the UFC cannot capture is his longevity in the fight game.
Overeem is a true veteran of the business who has gone toe-to-toe with almost every significant heavyweight spanning the first two decades of this century. As the former kickboxer wishes to prove his mettle against an upcoming generation of fighters, he has to keep in mind that his body can only hold up for so long.

His next opponent, Alexander Volkov, presents the perfect challenge for Overeem. The Russian has proven his durability through the years and is a highly calculative fighter. If Overeem manages a win over the former Bellator champ, he will probably be just a win away from a title shot.
