After cutting weight as the main event’s backup fighter, the UFC guaranteed Covington a title fight. However, Edwards disagreed with the revelation and felt he did not deserve it. After defeating Kamaru Usman twice, he pointed out Covington’s inactivity and one-fight win streak as a lack of merit. In his recent YouTube video, he clarifies why Covington got the nod from the UFC.
While speaking to Sky Sports, Edward said, ‘I still don’t think he deserves it, no. Obviously, I had a meeting with UFC in Vegas in the summer after the March fight. I had a few little niggles and injuries to deal with. But I was fit to go in August, but the UFC had plans for Sean and Malley. Jon Jones was headlining New York. He will bring in the most money right now, and it’s probably him.’
Edwards made a name for himself after he defeated Kamaru Usman and shook the world. He not only beat him once, but twice. As he mentions in the video, he faced some niggles after the March fight and took a break. However, now the champion is all set to fight and defend his title against Covington. Covington, popularly known as ‘Chaos,’ will look to win the fight and become the champion. It will be an exciting matchup as both fighters are very different.
