More Than a Year After Allegedly Getting Attacked, Colby Covington Gets Exposed in Jorge Masvidal’s Teammate’s Rant

Colby Covington is known for his polarizing presence in the world of MMA. He has earned a lot of heat from both fans and fellow fighters due to his knack for getting under his opponents’ skin. Last stepping into the Octagon in March 2022, ‘Chaos’ squared off against his former teammate and close friend, Jorge Masvidal, at UFC 272.

The sparks between Covington and Masvidal first flew during Colby’s exit from American Top Team (ATT), a period marked by severed relationships. The tension peaked when Masvidal was allegedly involved in an altercation with Covington at a Miami steakhouse. Now, “Chaos” gears up for his return at UFC 296, set to face Leon Edwards for the coveted UFC title. However, it’s Bellator Middleweight Champion Johnny Eblen who has some intriguing insights into Covington as both a teammate and a person. And he has quite a startling pick for the fight!

Jorge Masvidal’s teammate had this to say about Colby Covington

During his appearance on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Eblen opened up about his feelings towards Covington. He revealed that their interactions during their time at ATT left him with a sense of disconnection. He hopes Leon beats Colby, stating that he dislikes them all but has a stronger aversion to Colby.

He said, “I’ve trained with him a few times, I’ve spared with him a few times way back in the day when he was at ATT, and I don’t know, just didn’t feel like a teammate, if that makes any sense. I didn’t feel like I was drawn to him like other teammates at ATT. I feel like we both hate Colby, I hope Leon beats Colby. It’s like I don’t like you guys, but I hate Colby more.”

When pressed by Helwani to expand upon what he meant he stated, “Colby just sucks man. I just don’t like him. He’s not a great person, I’ve been around him a few times at the gym. He’s just a odd guy.” 

He also noted that he aligns himself with Team ATT rather than Team Colby due to the uncomfortable atmosphere Covington created at the gym. Eblen continues that while he had no outright negative experiences with Colby, their interactions always had an odd and unsettling energy.

What adds an intriguing layer to this narrative is Eblen’s recent victory over Fabian Edwards, the younger brother of Leon Edwards. Their Bellator matchup ended with a heated exchange in the cage between Leon and Eblen before they were separated.

Covington’s last triumph was a unanimous decision win against Masvidal. Which led to a social media feud and the alleged altercation that Covington claims left him with brain damage and an ongoing legal battle.

‘Chaos’ returns to the UFC and is back to his old antics

With his return to the UFC, Covington is back to his old ways, taking jabs at fellow fighters. In a recent interview with James Lynch, he targeted Islam Makhachev with his trademark controversial style- calling him names and downplaying his achievements. He stated, “He’s fighting little midgets and he’s barely beating midgets. Split decisions, split draws, pathetic.”

Makhachev recently captured UFC gold at UFC 280 and successfully defended his title against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284. Yet, Covington remained unimpressed, even revealing his involvement in helping one of Makhachev’s opponents in the past. “I trained the guy that knocked him out in the first round,” Covington said. “A guy in Adriano Martins, I trained the kid, southpaw to southpaw to get ready for Makhachev…”

Makhachev has expressed interest in moving up in weight and possibly facing Leon Edwards. If Covington manages to secure victory at UFC 296, it might provide an added incentive for Makhachev to make the transition to a higher weight class.

In a sport where rivalries and trash talk are part of the game, Colby Covington continues to be one of the most polarizing figures.
