Is Khamzat Chimaev the new king of the Octagon, surpassing even Khabib's legendary dominance?

In the recently concluded UFC 308 event, Khamzat Chimaev bulldozered his way right through division stable Robert Whittaker. In a fabled comparison, ‘Borz’ lodged his critics with the flair of his dominance. For the unversed, the Chechen native had a chip on his shoulder after being termed as a “pull-out merchant” owing to his barrage of health concerns. But all of that seems like a distant memory now.

Where others have had their doubts, UFC color commentator Joe Rogan has always been a fan of the Chechen fighter. Naturally, he was more than thrilled with his performance. In the latest segment of his JRE podcast, he compared Chimaev’s dominance with that of one of the legends of the sport. Let us take a look at what he had to say about the whole situation.

30-year-old Khamzat Chimaev is still unbeaten in his UFC career, which is a rare achievement for any fighter. Just a few months back, ‘Borz’ was in a hospital bed struggling with health problems, and many questioned his future in the sport. However, a change in his training plan and his determination have helped him make a grand comeback to the Octagon. The way he walked past the challenge of Robert Whittaker has impressed many out there including Joe Rogan.

The UFC color commentator invited Francis Foster & Konstantin Kisin on JRE episode #2220 for a candid chat. While speaking to the guest, Rogan seemed to be in awe of Khamzat Chimaev’s skill level. His performance forced Kisin to compare him to one of the legends of the sport, Khabib Nurmagomedov and while speaking to Rogan, Kisin said, “Reminded me of Khabib as well. Where, like, you get up, you get straight back down, and then you just run out of energy, right? ”

Rogan quickly took note of this and labeled Chimaev better than ‘The Eagle’. He said, “Maybe even more intense cuz maybe even more dominant. You know like to do that to Whittaker like that a guy who’s a world champion. Like even the Conor fight, it took a while before he overwhelmed him, you know. It took a while before he was just beating Conor’s a.s. Like the beginning of the fight is more competitive. Like this was just an overwhelming victory.”

Is Khamzat Chimaev the new king of the Octagon, surpassing even Khabib's legendary dominance?

Have an interesting take?

It was indeed an overwhelming victory, as Chimaev is now looking to get a title shot. Current champion Dricus Du Plessis is now waiting for his second title defense and is interested in taking on the Chechen wolf. In a recent interview with Brett Okamoto, ‘Stillknocks’ shared his game plan for how he would tackle the threat of ‘Borz’ if they ever faced each other inside the Octagon.

Dricus Du Plessis points out the only weakness in Khamzat Chimaev’s game

The South African Champion, in an interview with Brett Okamoto, claimed Chimaev was a ‘great first-round’ fighter. The key to beating ‘Borz’ is to take the fight deep into the later rounds and survive the initial pressure. DDP also pointed out that the Chechen fighter isn’t as effective in the later stages of the fight. During his outings with Gilbert Burns and Kamaru Usman, Chimaev visibly struggled in the latter halves on both occasions.

While speaking to Okamoto, he pointed out the game plan he will be walking to counter the threat of Chimaev. DDP said, “I think the fact that he always fights with his strength, he uses that strength – that’s why he gets tired. You can say the same about me. And at the end of the day, it’s going to come down to who’s willing to give up and who’s willing to die in there. You know, I’ve answered that question many, many times. ” Currently, there is no official announcement of the fight, and the fans will be willing to witness these two battle it out inside the Octagon.

Should Dricus Du Plessis take on Khamzat Chimaev next in his career? Or should he take on someone else? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
