Fans will remember that Joe Rogan recently spoke about the terrible conditions of Kamaru Usman’s knees and the drastic measures he has to take to deal with the pain. Rogan claimed in an episode of his podcast earlier this year that the former welterweight champion is in constant pain and has to even walk downstairs backward.

The podcast host revealed that it was largely because of his immense mental strength and resilience that ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ was able to fight despite being in excruciating pain. In a recent interview with Patrick Bet David and Adam Sosnick on the Valuetainment YouTube channel, Usman opened up about the condition of his knees and addressed Rogan’s claims about him.

The interviewer asked the 36-year-old about Rogan’s comments on his knees and if he really did walk backward when going downstairs. The Nigerian admitted that it was true that he had to walk backward downstairs due to the pain in his knees, to the point that he could walk downstairs backward at his home in the dark.

“Yeah I mean I did that for years it was funny. I was walking down backwards to where I can close my eyes in the middle of the night…dark, and I just walk downstairs backwards without grabbing the rail, like moonwalking Michael Jackson [style] out here,” Usman said.

Usman revealed that he had no cartilage in his right knee, which has made his knee arthritic. This means his knee joint has little lubrication, and his bones rub against each other when he moves it. This, he revealed, made it extremely painful for him to walk.

“I got so good at it because of the pain. It initially was… because I had a micro-fracture surgery in 2015. And that’s because I had no cartilage in that knee, and it was just bone on bone and it just created so much arthritis and it was just so painful just walking,” he added. However, the former champion revealed that his knee was getting better.

Usman reveals stem cell therapy helped knee pain

Kamaru Usman revealed that he had started walking normally again since last year. This, he stated, was because his knee pain had started to subside somewhat—the Nigerian credited stem cell therapy for helping him heal. “I think last year I started coming back, I started walking nor normally again… But the pain level is not where it used to be anymore you know I’ve done a couple of stem cells and it’s helped quite a bit,” he said.

This is good news for the former champion, as he is currently on a three-fight losing streak, a stark contrast to his days as the boogeyman of the welterweight division. Although the Nigerian was able to redeem his reputation in a controversial majority decision against Khamzat Chimaev, there is a feeling that his best days are behind him. But the fact that his knees are getting better means there is still a chance for a resurgent Usman to take the UFC by storm again. However, as he gets older, that chance becomes more remote.
