Leon Edwards, the #3 ranked UFC welterweight, will step into the octagon again at UFC 269.
Leon Edwards will step in to fight long-time rival Jorge Masvidal on December 11. Edwards, for many, has been the number 1 contender for the welterweight title for some time now but for some reason that hasn’t worked out.
He recently appeared on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. During the interview, they touched upon a lot of topics, out of which, one was people calling Leon a coward. When asked about what he thinks of such comments against him, Leon said, “It’s a mad world. MMA world is a mad world, I’ve come to realize. These people are crazy. I can’t listen to it. You can’t pay too much attention to it, otherwise, it will drive you mad.”

“Everyone out there, they’re tweeting, they’re talking s**t but I’m the only one who’s making these moves. I’m taking a back-step fighting number six in the world, to then for the title, you know, so it’s all good. Let them talk,” he added.
After winning his fight against Rafael dos Anjos in July 2019, Edwards was the favorite to challenge for the welterweight title. However, after that COVID hit and due to travel restrictions, Edwards was stuck in England. ‘Rocky’ couldn’t compete throughout 2020, and the fight ended up going the way of Gilbert Burns.
After making his comeback, Edwards has been fighting his way up, which he thinks is unfair. He last fought Nate Diaz at UFC 263, a fight that he won by unanimous decision, but again must fight Masvidal, who is ranked lower than him. Edwards in the interview said that, before agreeing to the fight, he made sure that he fights for the title next if he beats Jorge.
Leon Edwards vs. Jorge Masvidal
To say that Edwards and Masvidal don’t like each other would be an understatement. The two fighters have made it clear several times that there is no love for the other guy.
The two welterweights will finally square off at UFC 269 on December 11, 2021. The rivalry between the two started at UFC Fight Night 147. Masvidal was in the main event on the card and Edwards was also on it. After the event, both fighters got into an altercation backstage, which resulted in Masvidal landing a few shots, which left Edwards with an open wound.

The fight is three years in the making. Edwards in the past has been called a coward for apparently ducking Masvidal. Fellow welterweight, Gilbert Burns, is one person to say so. However, such comments don’t bother Leon. On The MMA Hour, he said that it is not just a fight with Jorge, this is war.
