Dana White makes an exciting addition to UFC Baku as Irina Alekseeva returns

Russia has produced numerous MMA stars and champions in not just the UFC, but in rival organizations as well. While fans never got to see the legendary Fedor Emelianenko fight inside the Octagon, they did get to see Khabib Nurmagomedov maul his opponents and retire with a 29-0 record. Now, we might have another fighter to watch out for in the UFC as Kazakhstan’s 34-year-old former Sambo fighter Irina Alekseeva has signed a contract with the UFC.

Dubbed the ‘Russian Ronda’, Irina Alekseeva has already made waves in the MMA world with a 5-2 record, with two submission wins and one knockout victory. The 34-year-old had previously competed in the UFC in 2023, losing and winning one fight each, and those were her last two UFC fights. After almost two years, she’ll be back at UFC Baku to take on Klaudia Sygula on June 21.

It’ll be interesting to see if Irina Alekseeva can make a triumphant return since she suffered a loss in her last fight. That’s still a couple of months to go, so let’s take a look at the next story in this roundup edition.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Irina Alekseeva the next Ronda Rousey, or just another fighter in the UFC lineup?

Movsar Evloev shares kind words for Alexander Volkanovski

It seems like there’s been some significant change in the stance of Movsar Evloev when it comes to 2-time featherweight champ, Alexander Volkanovski. The 31-year-old undefeated star had some pretty critical things to say about the Australian legend after his two back-to-back knockout losses. But with his competitive victory against Diego Lopes last weekend, Evloev had no choice but to admit ‘The Great’ is the real deal, as Volkanovski acknowledged the Russian after his UFC 314 win.

However, Movsar Evloev seems to doubt that the UFC wants him in the featherweight title scene. “If you ask Volkanovski, he will fight because he’s world champ. But we don’t know if UFC need it,” the 19-0 star told MMA Junkie. “I don’t know. Maybe [it’s the lack of finishes in the UFC] because the only thing they can talk [about] is just I have no finish.”

He further mentioned about his willingness to fight either Yair Rodriguez or Jean Silva, who recorded wins last weekend as well. “It was [a] good fight [by Jean Silva and Yair Rodriguez]. But I don’t think that’s enough to fight for title… If you wanna fight for title, you have to beat me first then you deserve,” Movsar Evloev added.

The 145-pound division, despite two top stars like Max Holloway and Ilia Topuria jumping to a higher weight class, has some serious contenders on the rise, and it remains to be seen who Alexander Volkanovski ends up defending his belt against next. Now, let’s look at the final story of the day.

Ex-UFC star attacks a fan after suffering a loss

Former UFC fighter Alex Nicholson, who fought in the Dana White-led promotion between 2016 and 2017, has garnered attention for all the wrong reasons. It just keeps happening as the 24-year-old is the most recent among the bunch to have altercated with a fan. After losing his fight against Darion Abbey via first-round TKO at XFC 52, Nicholson was somewhat ticked off at the result, but he still greeted the fans with fist bumps until he came across that one guy, who compelled him to get physical.

Footage has emerged from the incident where Alex Nicholson seemed triggered by something that the fan had to say. As such, he fired away a few shots at the unidentified fan, who didn’t hit back. Fortunately for the fan, security was there to de-escalate the situation, but it was surely no fun to be getting hit by a fighter who’s competed in heavier divisions throughout his career.

Commenting on the incident, Alex Nicholson revealed that the fan in question threatened him. “I believed I would never see out of that eye again then he grabs my arm and whispers in my ear, ‘ill kill you pu—y loser,'” the former UFC fighter wrote on Instagram. “Some souls should be recycled by the good lord. Unrighteous always will learn to be humble around me. I can see!! I am healthy and will compete again. For the record I slap this guy 1000/1000 times. God bless.”
