Dana White wanted to see the main event of UFC Tampa continue when he saw the ringside doctor calling the fight off due to Colby Covington‘s gruesome cut. Even ‘Chaos’ claimed that he wanted to keep fighting, but former UFC fighter Brendan Schaub claimed the former interim welterweight champion had no chance against a very game Joaquin Buckley. According to the 41-year-old, Covington’s body might have run its course.
Colby Covington’s gruesome cut on his right eyelid got the MMA community a bit concerned, but he insists that everything is just fine. But judging how he performed against Joaquin Buckley, who battered him till the fight lasted, Brendan Schaub lauded ‘Chaos’ for having a great chin, but the body of the 36-year-old could not handle much as he’s in the twilight of his career.
“Colby got beat up… and Colby has such a chin. There’s one thing you can’t take away from Colby is his f***ing chin. He’s getting lit up,” Brendan Schaub stated on ‘The Fighter and The Kid’ podcast. “[It’s Covington’s] age, dude. There’s nothing we can do about it. Especially with his style… Colby just has a lot of miles on him. It’s just over, man. And in that division, you’ve got to be ready to go.”

Not only Brendan Schaub but Hall of Famer Michael Bisping also echoed the same sentiment, pointing out that it just “wasn’t Colby Covington’s night” in Tampa. Moreover, ‘The Count’ even broke down the fight against Joaquin Buckley, highlighting the key aspects where ‘Chaos’ lagged behind compared to ‘New Mansa’.

What did Colby Covington do wrong against Joaquin Buckley?
Well, Michael Bisping claims that Colby Covington just wasn’t good enough for a well-prepared Joaquin Buckley, who busted up the former interim champion in the first few minutes of their bout. Although the UFC Hall of Famer lauded the Clovis native for taking on a much younger rival on rather short notice, Covington lacked speed and power.
“He was not good enough, he wasn’t quick enough, he wasn’t powerful enough with the wrestling. Joaquin Buckley just kind of picked him apart, busted him up early, opened up a cut right on the eyelid,” stated Michael Bisping. However, the fight wasn’t totally one-sided because Covington had his few moments as well when he was able to make use of his wrestling. But as we all know, that just wasn’t enough, as he was left wearing a crimson mask.

“Now granted, Colby Covington as the fight was going on, he was having more success with the wrestling. But his face was a mess. He was getting pieced up by Joaquin Buckley,” ‘The Count’ added. Interestingly, the UFC Tampa commentators predicted mid-fight that the doctors would step in, looking at Covington’s deep cut on his eyelid.
With the kind of cut he received during the fight, Colby Covington could take some time before he gets back to training mode. But will this loss make him stay out for another year-long hiatus? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
