In a recent TMZ interview with Michael Chandler, he revealed that he was still preparing for a fight against McGregor on June 29th. He stated, “That’s the date what I’m preparing for. Obviously we’ve spoken to the UFC. So that is the day when I am preparing for.”
Unlike boxing, where a fight isn’t actually set unless both fighters sign the contract, Chandler went on to reveal how the fighters in the sport of MMA start training for a fight, even from the initial stages. This is due to the high possibility of fights going through as soon as both parties start showing interest in it. Chandler confirmed he was already preparing for the fight saying, “Yeah. And that’s honestly how this sport moves along.”
“Sometimes there are fights that are made and it’s not contracts necessarily signed yet because as a gentleman’s agreement. So yeah, we’re good,” says Chandler, completely confident in McGregor to keep his word for their fight at UFC 302.
Given that both Michael Chandler and Conor McGregor were left in the dark regarding a timeframe for their fight, both fighters seem ecstatic to at least have a clear date for the fight. But bear in mind that the fight is set to be at middleweight. Here is a speculation why.

In a recent interview with MMA Junkie, UFC commentator, Jon Anik gave his take on why the middleweight fight between Chandler and McGregor is being set up for middleweight. He stated, “The only defense for that fight happening at middleweight, with all respect to my friend Conor McGregor, is his leg.”
He went on to claim that the only reason the fight is taking place at a way higher weight class is due to McGregor and the UFC trying to keep McGregor’s legs as durable as possible. Especially after the gruesome injury he suffered against Dustin Poirier in their third fight.
