Is Jon Jones' legacy really at risk from Tom Aspinall, or is Chandler just stirring the pot?

Many consider Jon Jones the greatest mixed martial artist of all time. While by no means a unanimous view, some of the most powerful people in the sport including Dana White and Joe Rogan have termed ‘Bones’ the GOAT.

And for good reason. The New York native after all, was the youngest champion in UFC history and has remained undefeated (except for a disqualification loss) in the octagon for his entire pro fighting career, having dominated the light heavyweight division before moving up to 270 last year. But, now, as he approaches the end of his career, the two-division has one thing in mind- legacy. But with recent accusations of him allegedly ‘ducking’ Aspinall, his legacy is at risk of being stained. But UFC lightweight star Michael Chandler doesn’t think so.

Jones, of course, is set to face former champ Stipe Miocic in his next fight. Miocic who was once considered the greatest UFC heavyweight of all time, is clearly at the end of his rope. After all, the American in 42, last fought three years ago, where he suffered a devastating knockout at the hands of Francis Ngannou. This is why the fight is seen as a walkover for ‘Bones’ and essentially just a way to get a big heavyweight star on his resume.

Most expect both Jones and Miocic to retire after the bout. However, there is just one kink in Jones’ plan- Tom Aspinall. Last year, the Englishman knocked out knockout artist Sergei Pavlovich to become the interim champion. Predictably, fans have been calling on Jones to fight Aspinall instead of Miocic since ‘Honey Badger’ holds the interim title.

But Jones has been adamant in wanting to fight Miocic, which has led fans to accuse him of ‘ducking’ Aspinall purportedly because of the threat he poses to the GOAT contender. Some have gone as far as to say that if Jones retires without fighting Aspinall, his legacy will forever be tainted. But Jon Jones doesn’t think so, saying in a recent interview that his legacy will be “just fine” if he doesn’t fight the Englishman.

And Michael Chandler, himself waiting to fight Conor McGregor, agrees. “Legacy is not tied to a certain opponent… bet on yourself,” ‘Iron’ tweeted in reference to Jones’ statement about his legacy. And after Aspinall took fresh shots at Jones and his legacy in a recent interview, Jones had a strongly-worded message for him.

‘Bones’ trashes Tom Aspinall over dodging accusations

Jon Jones has gone rogue. After Tom Aspinall called him the ‘champion of fight dodging’ in a recent interview, Jones left a strong and vulgar comment in the comments section of the video, accusing Aspinall of being obsessed with him and defending his legacy.

“This dude literally has my large black c–k in his mouth every week. I’m flattered. I absolutely guarantee he will not win more world championships than me. That’s truly all that matters at the end of the day. There’s been many champions, no one like me. I sleep good at night,” Jones wrote.

Jones, of course, is more than happy with his career so far, as he should be. On the other hand, he still remains an unproven prospect in the heavyweight division is concerned. After all, the New Mexico resident has only fought once in the UFC’s heaviest division. Admittedly, his performance was more than impressive as he was able to submit Ciryl Gane without any real issues in their UFC 285 clash early last year.

A fight against Miocic, who is not the same fighter he once was, will not do much to quell these doubts. While Jones’s overall legacy may not be much affected if he doesn’t fight Aspinall, there will rightfully be questions about his heavyweight legacy. What are your thoughts on Jones’s legacy if he retires without fighting Tom Aspinall?
