Dustin Poirier knows how to hold a grudge. ‘The Diamond’, of course, has been involved in some memorable feuds with the likes of Colby Covington and Conor McGregor, and didn’t relent from his animosity for ‘Mystic Mac’ even after the Irishman praised him last year. But perhaps the clearest example of his proclivity to hold grudges is his ongoing feud with Michael Chandler.
The bad blood between the two men started after their UFC 281 bout three years ago, which ‘The Diamond’ won via submission. After the fight, Poirier accused the former Bellator champ of fighting dirty and cheating. This led to a domino effect of the duo going back and forth at each other. The latest example of which came after Poirier made his pick for Chandler’s upcoming UFC 314 clash against Paddy Pimblett this April.
“Even though he is a b–ch, Chandler all day go heavy on the money,” Poirier told a fan on X who asked him for his prediction. And Chandler was pretty surprised at the Louisiana native’s strong words. ‘Iron’ took to his Instagram Story and shared his thoughts on it. “DANG, I REALLY THOUGHT WE WERE MOVING IN THE DIRECTION OF A CORDIAL RESOLUTION,” Chandler wrote along with a screenshot of Poirier’s X post.

To be fair, the former interim champ did pick Chandler to beat Pimblett. This could be seen as a complement, even if he did take a shot at the former Bellator champion. But then again, Chandler taking issue with it is understandable. It seemed the duo’s beef was on the off-ramp as Poirier told MMA journalist Helen Yee that the Missouri export was one of the fighters he loved to watch. “[Ilia] Topuria, [Justin] Gaethje, [Dan] Hooker. I’m not a huge fan of him, but Michael Chandler. Any time he fights, I’ll watch,” Poirier said a few weeks ago.

Responding to this, ‘Iron’ indicated that he wants to end their beef. And so he profusely praised Poirier and gave him his flowers. “We are slowly burying the hatchet. Great dude, just had some differences here and there. Legend. First ballot Hall of Famer,” Chandler wrote in an X post, clearly trying to resolve their beef.
Only for ‘The Diamond’ to throw cold water on all this progress with his recent X post. However, it does seem like it’s high time that the duo bury the hatchet. Why? Because Poirier is set to call it quits this year.

Dustin Poirier previews his final fight before hanging up gloves for good
Dustin Poirier is going to retire after one more fight. ‘The Diamond’, of course, nearly retired after his UFC 302 loss to Islam Makhachev last year, but felt that he would be leaving too much money on the table by retiring right away. Instead, the former interim champ plans to have one last dance and do it in his native Louisiana.
“I wish I could tell you more. I’ve been having calls every week with the UFC. But it’s looking like summer, in New Orleans, is close to happening for my retirement fight. A pay-per-view in New Orleans this summer would be incredible. That’s what I’m pushing for, that’s what the UFC’s working towards, and things are getting pretty close. Lay the gloves down where it all started in Louisiana, it would be an honor for me,” Poirier told ‘The Schmo’ in a recent interview.

But the big question remains! Who will he fight there? Well, there are a few good candidates. Justin Gaethje and ‘The Diamond’ have some unfinished business since they are 1-1 in their two fights so far. Dan Hooker, with whom Poirier had a spectacular fight back in 2020 is also on the shortlist, as is Max Holloway, who has fought and lost to him twice.

Even Ilia Topuria, freshly moved up to lightweight, has expressed interest in fighting Poirier. And of course, since they already have bad blood between them, Michael Chandler could well find himself being the Louisiana native’s last opponent.
