Remember Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem? The UFC 141 heavyweight main event from 2011 saw Lesnar lose in the opening round after Overeem kicked him in the midsection. Lesnar had undergone surgery for diverticulitis a few months before the fight and had a foot of his colon removed. So it was no surprise his opponent targeted his midsection. Lesnar retired from MMA after this bout (except for his UFC 200 return). Now, will we see Michael Chandler send Conor McGregor down the same route at UFC 303?

As UFC 303 approaches, controversy and issues surrounding the Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler fight seem to be surfacing with growing regularity. Every UFC expert wants to bake a bigger cake, offering their opinion to capitalize on the increased interest. And one aspect of the fight that is gathering interest is McGregor’s injured leg. Three years removed from UFC 264, the Irishman should be completely healed, but is the leg a potential target for every future opponent of ‘The Mac?’

Will Michael Chandler go after Conor McGregor’s leg?

Former UFC star Chael Sonnen, took a crack at this subject on his YouTube channel. He offered his analysis of a recent statement by Michael Chandler in an interview with Ariel Helwani. In his recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Michael Chandler addressed whether he’d target Conor McGregor’s injured leg. Chandler stated that he wouldn’t specifically focus on it. This response appeared to irk Chael Sonnen.

He said, “That’s a weird question to ask somebody. It’s a weird question to bring up, and it’s always interesting from a psychological standpoint what the response is because the guy does not give the response that is truthful.” He added, “He gives the response that he decides makes him look better.”Sonnen believes he understands the best mind games in combat sports, having been a UFC fighter himself.

Sonnen later said, “It’s the job and responsibility of a fighter to their fans and promoter.” He continued, “Your job is to beat the guy, and the first criterion to beat him is damage. So, shouldn’t you be doing this job? I mean, you have a deal with the fans, the promoter, the people who bet on it, and the people who carry us on. You have a responsibility.”

However, combat sports aren’t just about strength and trash talk; they also involve a lot of mind games and strategies. As evidenced by Michael Chandler’s two years of preparation, he likely doesn’t want all his hard work to go to waste. He could potentially use mind games against Conor McGregor as part of his overall strategy to win.
