Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski were going to settle their trilogy at UFC 272 in March. But an undisclosed injury caused Holloway to pull out of their originally scheduled bout. Hence, the promotion went ahead and booked the champion against Chan Sung Jung at UFC 273.

‘Blessed’ may not have been able to make it for the March PPV. However, he could be back in April as reports have emerged that he has recovered from his injuries and resumed his training.
Interestingly, Holloway has reportedly offered to step up as a backup fighter for the FW championship bout between Alexander Volkanovski and ‘The Korean Zombie’. This is something the UFC has done frequently, with various fighters stepping in as backups for PPV main event bouts.
Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway are the most dominant featherweight fighters around
Max Holloway fought through the entire division to get to the FW championship bout. Holloway, before losing to Dustin Poirier at LW, had compiled a 13 fight winning streak. During his run in the FW division, he beat fighters like Jose Aldo, Anthony Pettis, Charles Oliveira, Brian Ortega, and Frankie Edgar.
Similarly, Alexander Volkanovski fought and beat everyone UFC threw at him to earn a shot at ‘Blessed’.
The two have competed twice against each other. In the first fight, Volkanovski used better distance management and kept activity by throwing a lot of low kicks. Holloway, who had no answers for the feints and low kicks of the challenger, lost his belt.

Six months later, Holloway executed a better game plan, and many believe he actually won the fight. However, ‘The Great’ got the decision and went 2-0 against the Hawaiian.
‘Blessed’ dominated Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez to get back to a title shot, and, with news of his return, some fans may believe that he should get re-inserted into the title match rather than be a backup.

As Holloway has already proven himself as the number one contender, he should wait for the winner of the title fight and not drain himself to weigh in.
However, if he has offered to do so, it will be interesting to see what the UFC does with his offer. Is it good for the Holloway to serve as a backup fighter? Let us know in the comment section.
