Did Charles Oliveira's win over Chandler prove he's still a top contender in the lightweight division?

Today at Madison Square Garden, in what was one of his greatest battles, former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira once again proved why he is considered one of the greatest 155fers to ever do it. In a five-round co-main event battle against ranked #7 Michael Chandler, the Brazilian predominantly stayed on top throughout most of the rounds. However, he slipped in the later rounds but ultimately managed to cap off an impressive win.

Oliveira’s journey has not been easy, especially considering the setback he faced at UFC 300 against Arman Tsarukyan, when he was 1-2 in his last three fights. Determined to bounce back, Oliveira left no stone unturned in his quest to return to the winning track. His journey has been marked by sacrifice and hard work, something Oliveira’s partner recently opened up about, reflecting on his struggles over the past “30 days.”

Charles Oliveira’s professional and personal life has been marked by many challenges, from the stripping of his title to the end of his previous marriage. After suffering a razor-thin split decision loss to Arman Tsarukyan, Oliveira encountered even more challenges, but he rose to the occasion. In a major personal milestone, Oliveira recently became a father to a boy with his long-time partner, Vitoria Brum.

Like a true champion, Charles Oliveira kept his head high through these trials. His partner, Vitoria, recently shared a heartfelt note on Instagram, revealing the hardships Oliveira faced during his UFC 309 fight camp. She highlighted the emotional and physical toll the Brazilian endured while training for his fight. Oliveira confirmed this in a post-fight interview, stating, “I didn’t want to talk about it before, but yes, I did have a knee injury.”

Hours after the fight concluded, his partner shared a message, writing, “Nothing was easy, but if it was easy, it wouldn’t be you either. We went through an injury, and many nights of pain, and trained for several days with our lives turned upside down because we couldn’t sleep at night. The weight cut wasn’t as it should have been, taking your soul along with the kilos in that sauna. But even if, for a moment, you thought about giving up…”

Oliveira sends a message to Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan

Charles Oliveira’s career was once on a remarkable trajectory as he built an impressive 11-fight winning streak. However, since 2022, the former lightweight champion’s journey has faced unexpected challenges. His title was stripped after he failed to make weight for his bout against Justin Gaethje. Then, in his pursuit to reclaim the championship, Oliveira fell short in his highly anticipated showdown with Islam Makhachev.

Despite this, a victory over Beneil Dariush at UFC 289 sparked new hope. Yet, earlier this year, Oliveira encountered another hurdle, losing to Arman Tsarukyan. But now, following a hard-fought battle with Michael Chandler that pushed him to the brink in the fourth and fifth rounds, Oliveira has emerged with renewed energy and confidence.
