Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen may not face off in the Octagon at the end of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 33, but they have a different matchup in mind. UFC legends Colby Covington and Michael Chiesa, who will coach rival teams in the upcoming season, want to see a contest between their respective coaching staff members. Unlike previous TUF seasons, which ended with coach-versus-coach fights, ‘DC’ made it clear that neither he nor Sonnen is interested in fighting. Instead, they want Covington and Chiesa to settle the feud for them.
“Here’s the deal: We aren’t fighting,” Cormier said during TUF 33 media day. He revealed that he has no desire to fight anyone. Instead, he and ‘The American Gangster’ came up with an idea to make Covington and Chiesa fight instead. He said, “So, Chael and I are talking, and we’re going, I have Michael Chiesa on my coaching staff, Chael has Colby Covington on his coaching staff. Why don’t they just fight and Chael and I coach them? That’s about as close as we would both get to getting back into the Octagon.”

With Covington coming off back-to-back losses and Chiesa on a two-fight winning streak, a welterweight bout between the two could prove a stellar addition to the TUF finale. Sonnen wholeheartedly supports the concept, claiming that it is the most logical pairing. “To back Daniel up, I can’t believe nobody’s suggesting that. That’s the obvious fight. I don’t think Colby and Chiesa are going to get through this process without finding one another.”

Meanwhile, ‘DC’ is enjoying the opportunity to stir the pot. He stated that he would instigate them for four weeks without being punched. It’s unclear whether the UFC will make it official, but if Daniel Cormier and Sonnen have their way, Colby Covington and Chiesa will settle their team’s rivalry inside the cage. But what do fans think of the proposal? Well, they had giant requests of their own.
Fans demand a new twist in Colby Covington’s TUF fight plans
As soon as Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen revealed their plans, fans were left unimpressed. After all, they weren’t too interested in seeing Colby Covington go one-on-one against Michael Chiesa. However, they had another fighter in mind who could go against ‘Chaos.’ So, who is it? None other than Dustin Poirier. ‘The Diamond’ is looking for a retirement fight, so who better than to face one of the biggest heels in MMA history? Taking to the comments, the fans wrote, “Make it Dustin vs. Colby and Im booked.” “Makes sense, but I like the idea of Dustin going to 170 and taking on an aged-out Colby,” and “DC/Dustin and Chael/Colby would’ve been better.”

Many other fans believed that the current fight plans would be the best. Why? Well, that’s because it would allow Colby Covington to win. After all, ‘Chaos’ fell to seventh place in the rankings after losing to Joaquin Buckley via TKO (doctor stoppage) in the main event at UFC Tampa. On the other hand, Chiesa, who aims to fight one more time before retiring, won his second fight in a row by submitting Max Griffin in the UFC 310 First Prelims. But seeing that he has aged and is planning to retire, fans believe Colby Covington would finally have a chance to bounce back. The fans shared, “Chiesa is the easiest fight for anyone in the top 15 at WW,” “Covington might actually win that one 😂,” and “Finally a win for Covington.”
Not everyone was convinced that it should be other fighters going one-on-one on behalf of the coaches. After all, it is the coaches who face each other at the end of the season. So, this proposal led many fans to question why Chael Sonnen and Daniel Cormier even agreed to coach if they were not in it for the final fight. Taking to the comments, the fans wrote, “Then what are these two for?” “Why not just have Chiesa and Colby as coaches if they’re just gonna fight 😂?” and “DC and Chael just wanna be relevant 😂.” What do you think?
