Conor McGregor’s horrific leg fracture is a testament to the dangers of mixed martial arts. However, he wasn’t the first fighter to undergo the terrible ordeal. In the history of the UFC, there have been 2 other instances where fights ended due to a similar injury, and interestingly they both involved fighters who had faced one another on separate occasions. In 2013 at UFC 168, Anderson Silva suffered a leg fracture when he checked a kick from Chris Weidman.

Later, at UFC 261 in 2021, Weidman ended up facing the same fate in his fight against Uriah Hall. And so, with Conor McGregor indicating that he will be returning to action soon, Weidman has made some interesting observations and provided ‘The Notorious’ with advice on how to deal with the monumental task of fighting with the shadow of the injury still hanging over your head!

After suffering his injury, Chris Weidman had to undergo a grueling surgery and recovery process to get back to his feet. In a past interview with UFC Unfiltered, Weidman had revealed, “I got a titanium rod through the middle of my shin bone – right through the whole (bone), from the top of my knee all the way down to the low part of my ankle to the bottom of the tibia.”

The procedure is similar to what Conor McGregor went through according to a past statement by his surgeon. However, with the Irish superstar aiming for a return to the Octagon this summer, Weidman recently cautioned McGregor about what he could face when he comes back to the cage, having gone through the experience himself.

In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, the former UFC middleweight champion stated, “I know he watched my fight, I think he probably learned a lot watching my fight. Some of the red flags of what to be prepared for, for whoever he fights…”

Weidman also pointed out that throwing kicks after having broken your leg in a fight can cause a fighter to hesitate inside the Octagon and advised ‘The Notorious’ to “really train on kicking back.” He further went on to state, “…there is a psychological effect when you break your leg in half like that. So you need to really get that habit back strong and focus on that.”

Ultimately, McGregor’s journey back to the Octagon will require not only physical agility but also mental fortitude to overcome the lingering effects of his injury as confessed by Chris Weidman.

McGregor doesn’t have retirement on his radar

Conor McGregor may have been out of action for a significant period but the Irishman has no plans to put an end to his fighting career anytime soon. With his recent foray into Hollywood in ‘Road House’ alongside star Jake Gyllenhaal, many in the combat sports world debated whether this marked the beginning of the end of McGregor’s transition away from fighting.

However, during a recent interview with TNT Sports, ‘The Notorious’ indicated that he is far from done and stated, “In a box and going down into the ground—that’s when I’ll call it a day.” He also highlighted the fact that he is aware of his age and revealed, “I’m not going to be 40-odd and looking at the 19-year-old wunderkind from wherever he’s from…”
