Since becoming the interim champion, Tom Aspinall has done everything he can to capture Jon Jones’s attention. However, his dream of facing the heavyweight champion might not materialize, as Jones recently expressed his displeasure about competing against the Brit. Jones’s former arch-rival and UFC commentator Daniel Cormier recently shared his perspective on the matter via Instagram. However, Cormier believes the fight would only happen if the UFC provided Jones with an enticing offer.

Reflecting on Jones’s own rise in the sport, Cormier pointed out that Jones was once an up-and-coming fighter who received his well-deserved title shot. Now, as Aspinall finds himself in a similar position, fans are left wondering if the UFC will make this dream fight a reality.

During his video on Instagram Cormier said, “I’m not here to run the risk of someone making a name off me”. Shogun had to fight Jon Jones back in the day. Rampage had to fight Jon Jones back in the day. Those guys were big names who fought him as the young guy. He was the champion and he made a name off all those legends.”

Is Jon Jones protecting his legacy by avoiding Tom Aspinall, or is he genuinely uninterested?

Jon Jones states his reasoning for not considering a bout against Aspinall

Interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has been vocal about Jon Jones’s legacy, even accusing “Bones” of “ducking” a potential matchup with him. The Englishman believes that Jones’s recent hints about retirement stem from a desire to avoid facing him. However, Jones seems unfazed by the criticism and doesn’t consider Aspinall a serious contender.

In response, Jones took to X to address the matter, posting, “At this point in my career, every decision is rooted in purpose. My journey isn’t dictated by hype or outside opinions—it’s about crafting a legacy that speaks for itself, one step at a time. I’m here to do what’s right for my career and my legacy, with a vision that’s clear and unshakable. Focused, driven, and in complete control of myself. The story continues, and it’s unfolding exactly as I’ve envisioned.”

Additionally, Jones has expressed that Aspinall is not a worthy opponent and a bout against the 31-year-old wouldn’t do any favors to his legacy. Instead, ‘Bones’ tagged Light heavyweight king, Alex Pereira as a potential “what if” opponent if he changes his mind and continues competing after his UFC 309 bout against Stipe Miocic. But only if he decides to not hang up his gloves after all.
