The year 2024 has brought significant changes to the United States, with the most notable being the return of Donald Trump to the White House after a four-year absence. However, his path back to power has not been without its challenges. Trump’s first term ended with his defeat in the 2020 election, which sparked widespread controversy. In the aftermath of his loss, Trump posted claims of election tampering on X, triggering a series of events that ultimately led to the infamous January 6 Capitol attack by his supporters.

The aftermath of this event escalated the situation, with inflammatory tweets potentially causing further harm. As a result, X permanently banned Trump, raising critical questions about the limits of free speech. In a dramatic turn, Elon Musk acquired the platform for a staggering $44 billion in 2021 (now valued at $12.32 billion) and relaxed many of the platform’s policies, eventually allowing the now President-elect back on the site a year later.

Despite this, the issue of free speech remains unresolved, with ongoing debates over how much control governments and private organizations should have over individuals’ rights. In a recent appearance on the Tim Dillon Show (#422), Joe Rogan reflected on the situation before Musk’s takeover. The UFC commentator remarked, “A lot of people got removed from Twitter, especially right-wing people, including Trump. They literally kicked him off Twitter. For someone like him, who felt the impact of being silenced, you remember, he was tweeting constantly, and then all of a sudden, silence—nothing.”

However, Trump’s return to X was not solely the result of Elon Musk’s decision. It was a poll that Musk posted on X and took into consideration. He asked users whether they wanted Trump to be reinstated. Nearly 15 million users cast their votes in favor of his return, which led to the lifting of his ban. And this was revealed by the Tesla CEO himself.

Musk lifted the ban in 2022, but Trump didn’t return until 2023. His first post was a mugshot taken during his surrender at an Atlanta jail, accompanied by the caption, “Election interference. Never surrender!” Joe Rogan, a staunch advocate for freedom of expression and speech, highlighted this issue just before the 2024 presidential election.

Throwback: Joe Rogan sounds the alarm for free speech

Joe Rogan has been involved in stand-up comedy for over two decades. This has offered him a distinct perspective on humor, government control, and censorship across different eras. With the rise of social media in the 21st century, these platforms have become an easy tool for citizens to express themselves. But what happens when the government seeks to control them? This question became more pressing in 2019 when Kamala Harris warned social media platforms to enforce stricter policies against “hate” and “misinformation,” threatening to hold them accountable.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg even admitted to facing immense pressure to remove content that the government sought to censor. This raised concerns for Joe Rogan, who, in September, spoke with his close friend and X’s CEO Elon Musk about the potential dangers of Kamala Harris winning the 2024 presidential election and its threat to the First Amendment. Rogan remarked, “I don’t think it [censorship] turns around if Kamala Harris gets into the office. I think they clamp down more. She openly discussed the need for the same rules to apply to Facebook.”
