The 32-year-old fighter recently participated in an interview with journalist Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour podcast, which was hosted on the MMAfightingwithsbn YouTube channel. While having the conversation about the Strickland vs. Adesanya match, Whittaker lauded Strickland’s game plan and execution, expressing his surprise at Sean’s dominant victory over Israel.
Continuing the conversation regarding the imminent rematch that Dana White claims will happen soon, Whittaker offered a cheeky response, as he was on the opposing side of those who believe that an immediate rematch is a frivolous idea. Whittaker expressed “Life isn’t fair, right? Yeah, but I think it’s silly if Izzy gets an immediate rematch because this isn’t his first loss as champion. He didn’t technically defend the belt again. Yeah, he lost to Pereira, got the belt back, and then lost it again. And you have to ask, is your idea just to keep letting him out rematch when he loses? It’s that’s the fight game. It puts the UFC in a tricky position because Izzy’s kind of there, one of their premier guys. You know, he’s one of the poster boys.”
Whittaker questioned the idea of Israel Adesanya getting an immediate rematch. He noted Adesanya’s prior title loss and how frequent rematches could challenge the UFC, given his top fighter status.
