Combat sports are show business. The most successful fighters, from Muhammad Ali to Floyd Mayweather to Conor McGregor, understood this. The WWE became the most popular combat sports promotion in the world based on this principle.

And one of the most important skills a fighter can possess outside of fighting is mic skills. Calling out a fighter, no matter the skill difference, is one of the best ways to manifest the fight, as Chael Sonnen so successfully did in his career. And UFC phenom Bo Nickal is doing just that. However, UFC legend Daniel Cormier does not like the former wrestler doing it against Khamzat Chimaev for reasons that are sure to make Nickal unhappy.

‘DC’ thinks Nickal should not be calling out Khamzat Chimaev

In a conversation with Ben Askren, former two-division UFC champion Daniel Cormier discussed Bo Nickal’s trash talk. The American has created a splash in his short UFC career and has singled out fellow undefeated fighter Khamzat Chimaev. He has been calling him out in recent days.

“Hey when do you make of Bo Nickal just talking so much trash about Khamzat Chimaev? Like he talks a lot about him, he just kind of says like I’m gonna show him there’s levels to this because Khamzat makes his money wrestling. And Bo obviously is a much better wrestler on paper, but like he just constantly goes at Chimaev,” the former heavyweight champion said.

‘DC’ did not think the Southpaw was in the same league as Khamzat yet and that his recent success had gone to his head. The New Orleans native pointed out that his last opponent was not very good, and Nickal should refrain from fighting Chimaev just yet.

“I would not like to see Bo fight him yet I just believe that Bo may be getting a little excited because of the level of success he’s having but he ain’t in there with guys like Chimaev… The last guy he fought wasn’t very good… They’ll fight at some point but it’s a little early for that, I think,” Cormier told Askren.

Ben Askren defends Bo Nickal

Askren, however, felt that Nickal was following a good strategy. He felt that the ATT member was setting up fights for the future and was putting himself in a good position by feuding with Chimaev. “What I like about that is Bo is talking trash to a lot of people. So he’s said he’s setting these fights up for down the road, right? But things go right, to go that is he’s gonna be fighting one of those people,” he said.

Nickal seems to genuinely not like the Chechen. And his wrestling pedigree is one of the best in the promotion. Calling out the most popular fighters would give him publicity and set up future fights with them. And that is a tried and tested strategy to succeed in combat sports, notwithstanding the merits of ‘DC’s objections.
