Undefeated fighter Ian Garry has been making headlines after his expulsion from Team Renegade. The MMA community and even Garry himself can’t seem to stop talking about it. However, welterweight champion Leon Edwards understands what’s going on. He believes that Garry is simply seeking attention.

During a recent edition of ‘The MMA Hour’, host Ariel Helwani noted to Leon Edwards how the story of Ian Garry exiting his gym has led to more people talking about it than the upcoming UFC 296 pay-per-view. ‘Rocky’ and ‘The Future’ both have important bouts on December 16th, but discussions regarding that topic have taken the backseat. Let’s see what Edwards had to say about that.

The welterweight champion thinks it is strange that people are talking about what happened with Ian Garry. He is surprised that everybody is pointing their fingers at Leon Edwards’ team and the coaches. However, he believes that leaving the gym did not affect Garry as much as he claims it has. “It like weird, right? I don’t get it because this is the third gym that he has been kicked out of, right? So I don’t know why now it’s just such a big thing that it came to Renegade, the coach asked him to leave… he’s making a big story of nothing,” said Leon Edwards.

‘Rocky’ reminded the 26-year-old Irish star that it had never been his gym to leave in the first place. He was just there for a brief amount of time before hopping into a different gym. In fact, Leon Edwards revealed that it is a recurring situation for Ian Garry. He further stated, “It’s not really your gym. You’ve been there for two weeks then you went to another gym… you went to Brazil [and] you went to like ten other gyms.” In addition to these statements, the welterweight champion also gave his take as to why Ian Garry hasn’t put this issue to bed.

Is ‘The Future’ looking to get some attention?

Leon Edwards believes that the reason Ian Garry hasn’t stopped talking about his expulsion from his gym is because he wants to stay relevant. He wants people to talk about him, build up engagement, and possibly get into a war of words with the British fighter, according to the UFC champion. Edwards said, “I think everyone knows what it is now, and he’s just looking for that back and forth… He wants people to talk about him, he wants me to go back.”

Despite all these controversies, Leon Edwards believes that Vicente Luque is going to be a challenge for Ian Garry. That should be his focus. As such, he wished the 26-year-old well for the fight this weekend. “Like I said, he’s got a tough fight on his hands, and good luck to him,” Edwards told Ariel Helwani. But when the ‘MMA Hour’ host asked the champion if he thought Garry was inching towards the title, he didn’t think that was the case. I don’t think he’s near the belt… I don’t see him winning and getting to fight for the title, you know. But I feel like he’s trying to get his back-and-forth engagement [on] social media,” the 175lbs champion added.

Leon Edwards mentioned earlier how the culture in his gym did not match up with how Ian Garry conducts himself. ‘The Future’ always has a camera crew with him during training and often fails to make it to sessions in time. Nevertheless, they are now on separate paths and both fighters have their own business to deal with at UFC 296. We will have to wait and see how things unfold for Edwards and Garry when 2023 comes to an end.
