Can Khamzat Chimaev's war-torn past fuel his quest for UFC middleweight gold against Whittaker?

When Khamzat Chimaev made his mark by arriving in the UFC, no one anticipated he would become such a huge star. However, multiple fights later, and with an undefeated record, ‘Borz’ has become a fan favorite. Despite his recent health scares and inactivity, his upcoming outing at UFC 308 is sure to boost his rankings. With such an impressive resume already, Chiamev has become a household name within the sport and the MMA community is excited to know more about the Chechen wolf.

Chimaev is looking to go for the undisputed middleweight gold. However, he will have to pass the harrowing test of a former champion Robert Whittaker in Abu Dhabi. The MMA community is well aware of Chimaev’s antics inside the cage but we don’t talk much about his back story and the origins of his parents. So, ahead of his upcoming match, let’s have a closer look at it.

All we know about Khamzat Chimaev’s mother and father

Life is different for those who have lived through peaceful times and for those who have endured and witnessed the tyranny of war in their backyard. Khamzat Chimaev was born during a time when his region, Chechnya, was going through stressful and harsh times. Well, very little is known about Chimaev’s parents as he likes to keep that side of his life as private as possible. As of now, the only family member, whose name has been officially revealed by the middleweight title prospect is his brother Artur Chimaev.

While having a conversation with the media, Chimaev emphasized that his father scolded him after he showed his middle finger at a weigh-in, “After I showed the middle finger at the weigh-ins, My father scolded me. It was a bad look for me, for sure. They( fans) showed me that sometimes you just don’t control it when you are young,” said Chimaev.

He further added, “Now as I have gained more experience I don’t act impulsively. I try to figure out what is the right thing to do. There were just some fans who showed me the middle finger. In addition to this, ‘Borz’ revealed that his father threatened him that he would make him herd cattle for his unruly behavior.

As much as he fears his father, his love for his mother is on another level. In one of his conversations with the media, Chimaev confessed that he would just love to go back to his hometown and enjoy a treat cooked by his mother. Well, ‘Borz’ might be living his dream life for now but this was not the case always as his childhood was filled with horrible encounters.

Where is Khamzat Chimaev from? Early life

Born on May 1, 1994, on the outskirts of Gvardeyskoye in Chechnya, Russia, Khamzat Chimaev was a child of war. During that time Chechnya was a de facto independent state called the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. The fighter started his career very early at the age of 5 and even won a bronze medal at the Russian National Championship when he was competing at the junior level.

‘Borz’s childhood is marred by trauma as growing up he had to face the fear of getting killed as the entire region was going through a war-like scenario. The combatant witnessed the horrors of violence from a very young age. Little did Chimaev know he had to lose many relatives and friends in the war. He had to flee from his home multiple times as the war situation in his country went from bad to worse. Chimaev even states that he used to face discrimination due to his Chechen background.

Fed up with everything, in 2013, Chimaev left Russia with his mother and brother, as his brother required surgery that wasn’t possible in his native land. Since then, he has not returned to Russia and has embraced Swedish nationality. ‘Borz’ had a difficult childhood, and migrating to Sweden felt like a newfound sense of freedom.
