Kamaru Usman and his move up to the middleweight division came as a surprise to fans. Khamzat Chimaev was originally supposed to face Paulo Costa at UFC 294. But the middleweight bout fell through due to Costa’s revelations about a surgery that happened just weeks away from the event. As fans were left wondering if they would see Chimaev in the cage, Usman decided to step up and add another level of excitement to the card.

Usman will be moving up from the welterweight division for this matchup. The former champion is looking to add another win to his record after suffering back-to-back losses in his last two Octagon appearances. The build-up to the short-notice fight has seen Chimaev assert that Usman isn’t a challenge for him. But an exchange between the two at a pre-fight press conference has left fans confused. And many have even stated that the ability to talk trash is what made Conor McGregor such a huge star!

Paulo Costa and his compromised arm led to Usman getting the opportunity to face Chimaev at UFC 294. Costa and Chimaev had already engaged in a heated back and forth during the build-up to the now-canceled bout. There were allegations of harassment and harsh words were exchanged online between both camps.

Kamaru Usman and Khamzat Chimaev recently spoke about their matchup at a pre-fight conference. In a playful analogy, Chimaev compared himself to a newer iPhone model, asserting that “he (Usman) is iPhone 5. I am like Pro.” Usman responded by acknowledging the differences but suggesting, “The iPhone Pro sometimes doesn’t fit in certain pockets. You might need just a regular iPhone. They both take good pictures, and they both work just fine.

This interaction was shared online on Instagram by MMA Junkie. And from how the fans reacted, they were certainly not impressed by the trash talk even though they found it hilarious!

The new phone has overheating issues lmao so that means Khamzat will be gassed 30 seconds in

A way better comeback from Usman would have been “every year they hype up a new iPhone and you realize it’s the same sh*t, nothing special”

Many fans found the analogy of comparing themselves to iPhones to be quite humorous, but others felt it was silly and cringe-worthy. While some fans appreciated the banter, others suggested more clever comebacks, like comparing the new iPhone hype to Chimaev’s skills. So not all trash talk seemingly hits the mark, but Chimaev’s take on his opponent certainly does.

Chimaev thinks Usman had one reason for taking this fight

Since making his professional debut, Chimaev has maintained an unblemished record, achieving a 6-0 record in the UFC. With his latest win occurring in 2022. In that match, he swiftly submitted Kevin Holland in a 180-pound catchweight contest, wrapping up the fight in less than half a round.

Khamzat Chimaev expressed his belief that Kamaru Usman is willing to face him due to the financial incentive, viewing himself as a lucrative opponent. During a UFC 294 media day, Chimaev addressed the possibility of fighting Usman, explaining that he would consider dropping to the welterweight division if Usman held the title. But he thinks Usman chose to fight him for reasons other than glory.

He stated, “The guy comes just to make money, it’s a lot of money put on that. I think he gets a lot of good money when somebody fights me. It’s different-level money. That’s why he’s here.”

Chimaev also suggested that while fighters often emphasize their legacies and championship belts, the allure of significant financial rewards was a key factor in Usman’s decision to face him. As fans wait to see the two fighters face each other inside the Octagon, they are left hoping that the fight is better than the trash talk on display!
