Apart from the greatest fighters, the UFC has given us some of the greatest rivalries that have culminated into some of the greatest fights in combat sports history. One can’t forget infamous feuds like those between Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman, Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones, Dominick Cruz and Uriah Faber, and TJ Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt, among many others. But the one that people remember the most, and still recall to this day is the one between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The Conor-Khabib rivalry was so heated that it wasn’t quite settled in the Octagon, where ‘The Eagle’ took ‘The Notorious’ to deep waters and submitted him. It didn’t stop there, though, since Khabib Nurmagomedov literally embodied his moniker when he flew out of the cage and jumped on Dillon Danis. The fallout of that rivalry can still be felt to this day. Now, with the aftermath of McGregor’s civil suit, six years later, Team Khabib has evoked an infamous moment in the Octagon from UFC 229 – one that visibly broke Conor McGregor’s aura in the realm of striking.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is gearing up for UFC 311, and boy, it’s going to be a tough time for him! Two of his best fighters are going to fight for titles with Islam Makhachev defending his lightweight belt against Arman Tsarukyan and Umar Nurmagomedov vying for Merab Dvalishvili’s bantamweight one. Amid all the prep for his fighters, the 29-0 for UFC lightweight champion was seen training a particular move that shocked MMA fans back when he fought Conor McGregor in 2018.
Coach Javier Mendez uploaded a video of ‘The Eagle’ throwing an overhand right – yes, the same one that dropped Conor McGregor in the second round of their UFC 229 headliner. That move was infamous because we never saw McGregor get grounded via strikes before that moment, and people did not expect that from the wrestling-heavy Dagestani former champ. Of course, ‘The Notorious’ wasn’t fully grounded and recovered his bearings in time to avoid Nurmagomedov’s flying knee attempt, but that was still a moment that left fans in awe of ‘The Eagle’.
Here’s what coach Mendez wrote as captions to the video, “The punch that was practiced over thousands of times only to be used once in competition @khabib_nurmagomedov hit Gold when it mattered and repetitions while staying grounded to the daily grind is what every fighter must do to make it count. Results come from hard work and staying focused on the basics to sharpen your skills @ifbbprobyers. #staysharp.”

It’s safe to assume that there’s no love lost between the fighters. Conor McGregor never missed a moment to mock Khabib Nurmagomedov. He stooped to a new low when he took shots at Khabib’s deceased father when ‘The Eagle’ mocked McGregor for losing his UFC 264 bout to Poirier via an unfortunate leg snap. ‘The Notorious’ will always be haunted by the UFC 229 loss, and his bitterness comes through every so often.
As for Khabib Nurmagomedov – he seems to be living his best life, raising the next generation of Dagestani talent. Still, that doesn’t stop him from launching scathing attacks at the Irishman for the latter’s antics. The latest civil lawsuit loss for ‘Mystic Mac’ provided the perfect basis for Team Khabib to throw shade at McGregor. Let’s see what they had to say.

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makahchev issue ‘nasty’ jibes at McGregor
Conor McGregor being found liable in the civil lawsuit brought forth by Nikita Hand to the Dublin High Court gave team Nurmagomedov the perfect chance to launch scathing jibes at ‘The Notorious’ one. “Filthy b—-,”, wrote Islam Makhachev on X, at the height of the civil lawsuit. He furthermore claimed that more details were waiting to surface, regarding the civil case.
Team Khabib is usually known for discipline and restraint. So when Islam Makhachev posted such scathing remarks, it even took his teammate Daniel Cormier by surprise. “Honestly, it seems a little bit off-brand for Islam,” he said, pointing out how the lightweight champ is usually more reserved.

In another instance, when an X handle named ‘Convictmcgregor’ posted that they would cover the legal fees of Nikita Hand, Khabib Nurmagomedov, reposted it with the following captions, “Good job guys , you have my full support, this guy deserve punishment.”
Regardless, it looks like this rivalry may never be put to rest. With all the legal and financial troubles haunting Conor McGregor this year, it doesn’t seem like he’ll find the mainframe to reconcile with his past rival. As for Khabib Nurmagomedov, he’s got bigger fish to fry, like cornering his teammates at UFC 311. It’s unlikely that he’ll come around to burying the hatchet with the Irishman after that.
