UFC 229 was one of the most epic nights in UFC history. Khabib Nurmagomedov secured a dominating victory against Conor McGregor. While fans of The Eagle left happy that night, McGregor fans have been calling for a rematch since. A rematch, until now, never materialized. However, at one point in 2020, it felt as if Nurmagomedov would fight McGregor under one condition.

In an interview from 2020, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s late father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov named a condition for his son’s rematch with Conor McGregor. Nurmagomedov’s coach and father said, “We also need revenge against Conor, but give us $100 million

At that point, Khabib Nurmagomedov was scheduled to defend his UFC lightweight title against Tony Ferguson. Nurmagomedov’s father added, “The day after the fight against Ferguson, give us that amount and then why not hold a rematch? I don’t know, maybe Dana White wants to arrange it (for that amount), he needs that fight.” 

UFC President Dana White was also very interested in making this fight. After Conor McGregor’s victory over Donald Cerrone, White compared the fight to some epic bouts in fighting history.

UFC President Dana White definitely knows how to run his business. The UFC President was aware of how a potential second fight between McGregor and Nurmagomedov could have broken records. White shed light on why a fight between the two makes perfect sense.

The UFC President started by comparing Nurmagomedov and McGregor’s rivalry to some of the most iconic ones in combat sports. White said, “We’re looking at like you know, Hagler-Hearns, We’re looking at like… Ali-Foreman. This is a massive fight with global appeal.

White also mentioned that the fight between Nurmagomedov and McGregor was the bout to make. He added, “It’s the fight that you make. It’s the fight that makes sense. It’s for the 155-pound title. ”

A second fight between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov never happened. Also, the possibility of it ever happening is unlikely. While Nurmagomedov has now retired from mixed martial arts, Conor McGregor is active but has been struggling with his form.
