Does Khabib's tax trouble tarnish his legacy, or is it just a bump in the road?

Khabib Nurmagomedov has landed in troubled waters with legal issues biting back. The former UFC lightweight champion reportedly owes more than $3.4 million to the Russian government in unpaid taxes. This discrepancy even led him to close some of his business firms, with the Russian Federal Tax Service freezing his bank accounts associated with various businesses. And now, he had his cars taken away.

On Wednesday, the entire fighting community had their eyes peeled and focused on ‘The Eagle’. “Championship Rounds” provided an update on July 24 that Enforcement proceedings have been initiated against the former UFC star

The report read, “The case against Khabib was opened on July 5th and since that time he has been prohibited from leaving the Russian Federation. Bailiffs have launched a search procedure for his property for subsequent seizure and sale. This includes a family house in Dagestan and his car collection.”

His car collection included a Ferrari California T, Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Toyota Land Cruiser, and a Toyota Tacoma. The total sum of these cars was about $813 thousand. In addition, a family house in Dagestan has also been seized, as per Championship Rounds, with the total value of the seized assets reportedly amounting to around $900,000.

Among his cars, his Ferrari was the costliest at $300k followed by the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S, which is valued at $161k. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is priced at $122k, while the BMW 7 Series holds a value of $101k. The Toyota Land Cruiser and the Toyota Tacoma are worth $85k and $44k respectively.

This makes a small dent but Nurmagomedov would still owe upwards of $2 million to the Russian government. It was the Russian media outfit ‘Mash’, who was the first one to reveal Nurmagomedov’s tax troubles, with the proceedings beginning on July 5. But little did the former mixed martial artist know how tough it was going to be for his ventures and automobile collection.

‘The Eagle’ also had his businesses seized, and his business accounts barred by the Federal Tax Service on July 1. They began looking into the matter long before Nurmagomedov announced his retirement from the realm of mixed martial arts. But the investigations flared up after some irregularities in the Dagestani’s financial statements were revealed.

Have an interesting take?

Rumors are that Nurmagomedov used these funds to invest in businesses in the UAE among other countries. Amid all this hubbub, there are also reports of him being granted UAE citizenship, where the residents have tax benefits.

The Dagestani legend led a simple life. According to the beloved UFC color commentator, Joe Rogan, even though Nurmagomedov was pretty rich, he chose to drive a Toyota truck. But that didn’t mean the former champion refused to add some beautiful machines to his garage.

Moreover, he has been prohibited from leaving the Russian Federation but “The Eagle” has been living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, for more than one year, which could invite further trouble. A reason for his troubles could be the secret possession of the UAE passport.

Earlier this month, Khabib’s camp had denied allegations of tax evasion. “The information about tax debt is inaccurate. Khabib continues to engage in business projects and develop them,” a statement read. But now that the Russian authorities have taken action and started seizing his assets.

Nurmagomedov’s troubles have garnered quite a bit of attention, with many fans mocking he would have to come out of retirement to make the money needed to get him out of this fix. But it was archrival Conor McGregor’s comments that had the entire fanbase stuck with gaping eyes.

Conor McGregor never leaves a chance to get back at ‘The Eagle’

The former UFC double champion and Nurmagomedov’s nemesis took to X and mocked the Dagestani as the news of his tax evasion spread like wildfire. McGregor bashed Nurmagomedov and called him a “rat” for evading taxes. This definitely wasn’t the first time the ‘Mystic Mac’ called Nurmagomedov a ‘rat’. But he didn’t stop there.

The Irish mixed martial artist made fun of his former opponent’s financial situation, quoting, “broke and on the run if you see him tell him push ups for cash.” This was indeed a comment on Nurmagomedov losing access to his business bank accounts. ‘The Notorious’ continued and in another tweet, he wrote, “I heard he is now a porta potty in Dubai 😂 #whereiskhabib #gettings**tonindubaibyarab #portapotty #s**tonbuss**tonhim #khapoobear.”

According to a few reports, Nurmagomedov had taken Emirati citizenship right after he was troubled with the taxes. He has invested a huge sum in the Middle East and has built a pretty impressive portfolio in the UAE. It’s highly unlikely for the former fighter to go bankrupt, even though his Russian assets were already seized. But that doesn’t seem to be enough to minimize the Dagestani’s headaches.
