The entire MMA world is abuzz with anticipation for the UFC 302. UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev will defend his lightweight title for the third time against formidable Dustin Poirier, a former interim lightweight champion. It would be a crucial bout for Poirier as this might be his last chance at grabbing the belt but his matchup also holds particular significance for Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Firstly, it features his close friend, Islam Makhachev. Secondly, it’s a match with Dustin Poirier, whom “The Eagle” defeated via submission in 2019. In a recent UFC video, Nurmagomedov offered insights on the upcoming bout and shared his thoughts on Poirier’s skills.

Despite retiring in 2020 and stepping away from concerning duties, Khabib Nurmagomedov is back in Islam Makhachev’s corner for a fight with a familiar foe. Recalling his dominant victory over Dustin Poirier nearly five years ago, Khabib confidently stated in the UFC 302 Countdown video, “I already defeated Dustin nearly five years ago. If people are asking if he’s made significant changes then, I don’t think so.”

While acknowledging Poirier’s veteran experience, Islam Makhachev isn’t fazed. He acknowledged ‘The Diamond’s experience, saying, “Everybody knows Dustin’s game because this guy has been in this sport for many years, and he has always fought the same. It’s not a secret; He has good boxing, and he uses it. That’s why I have to be ready.”

However, Poirier’s record since his clash with Khabib tells a different story. He’s gone 5-2, with four KO/TKO victories, one via decision, one via submission, and one because of a doctor’s stoppage, showcasing his ability to compete at the highest level. Speaking of losses, one was a title fight against Charles Oliveira at UFC 269 while his last defeat came against Justin Gaethje at UFC 291. There is no doubt that Poirier has evolved as a fighter following his defeat against ‘The Eagle’ in 2019.

Following Islam Makhachev’s admiration for Dustin Poirier’s experience and boxing skills, Khabib Nurmagomedov took things a step further in another scene from the Countdown. He stated that Makhachev possessed a superior skill set in every aspect. While Dustin Poirier hasn’t conceded this point, he has acknowledged the 32-year-old’s strengths, even suggesting it might surpass Khabib’s own.

Makhachev’s strengths outshine Khabib’s, as per The Diamond

After defeating Conor McGregor at UFC 229 and solidifying his status as an undefeated champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov shocked the world by retiring at his peak two years later. Islam Makhachev, his training partner and heir apparent, has since captured the title and emerged as potentially even greater threat. Though both Dagestani fighters share a similar foundation under the same coach, Poirier is keenly focused on the subtle differences in their styles that might give him the edge.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Sports, Dustin Poirier highlighted the difference between the two fighters. He believes Makhachev boasts a more well-rounded skillset compared to Khabib. “Islam’s definitely a different fighter. Poirier explained. “He’s got great clinch, good trips, and I think he’s a more fluid striker than Khabib, for sure.” However, Poirier acknowledged Khabib’s unique wrestling style, emphasizing it wasn’t just about ground and pound. “Khabib would keep you there, twisting you up however it took,” Poirier said.
