Jon Jones, the current UFC heavyweight champion, polarizes the MMA community. However, no one can deny that he ranks among the best mixed martial artists to have entered the Octagon. Fans have also taken note of his distinctive sense of humor through his Twitter activity. Particularly in his recent exchanges with Derek Sullivan, an employee of Jake Paul’s ‘Betr’ media group. Sullivan garnered attention in the combat sports community due to his provocative remarks directed at Nate Diaz during the lead-up to the Paul vs. Diaz fight. He subsequently disclosed that it was merely an effort to have some lighthearted fun with a professional fighter.

Recently, Jon Jones engaged in a tongue-in-cheek Twitter/X spat with Sullivan. Bones and Sullivan exchanged words back and forth, and while both sides were generally lighthearted, some of Jones’ responses surprised everyone. And many fans were shocked to see this side of ‘Bones’!

The saga of the ‘beef’ between the two began in March 2023, prior to Jon Jones’s heavyweight debut against Ciryl Gane. In a video shared by the official ‘Betr’ account, Sullivan introduced himself to Jon, expressing anticipation for their upcoming fight. However, he revealed his bet on Gane, believing that Gane would win, despite his expectation of a good fight.

6 months later, after beating Gane, Jones responded to a video of Sullivan sparring with a smiling emoji. Which prompted a response from Sullivan where he speculated that Jones might still be upset about his earlier bet against him. He stated, “But look Jon, you’re a legend, you’re a GOAT but keep my name out of your f**king mouth or we’re gonna have a problem.”

Jones then tweeted out an apology to Sullivan stating that he was actually a massive fan and asked for forgiveness. Sullivan responded by saying, he appreciated the apology and might even get him ringside seats for his first fight.

The exchange ended with Jones stating, “Man lesson learned, thanks a ton for the forgiveness. I hope one day Jake realizes what an amazing asset and athlete you are. I already have plans on making it to your first fight! I know tickets are probably going to sell out fast. I would be so awesome if you followed me back on the gram! Please make my wish come true, follow me back! Your number one fan Bones.”

Sullivan has been involved in a ‘beef’ with a professional fighter before. During the Paul vs. Diaz press conference, he learned that calling out fighters is not something to be taken lightly!

Sullivan and his ‘beef’ that almost got too real

Interestingly, this isn’t Sullivan’s first altercation with a professional fighter. He dared to challenge Nate Diaz by claiming he could beat his brother Nick Diaz, a former Strikeforce Welterweight Champion, and an MMA legend. Nate Diaz, unamused by Derek’s audacity, reminded him of his formidable squad and warned that he deserved to have his “f**king a** whipped.”

In response, Jake Paul intervened and instructed Sullivan (Derek) to “shut up”. Paul even hinted at firing Sullivan later. Although it was later confirmed that Sullivan wasn’t fired but just reprimanded in private by Paul.
