At this point, everyone knows that Colby Covington plays an overblown character. Taking inspiration from iconic WWE heels like Ric Flair and UFC counterparts like Chael Sonnen, the American plays an arrogant, disrespectful, and generally loud-mouthed line crosser for marketing purposes. Even though he is quite reserved and remarkably respectful in private.
This is why fans don’t take his trash talk against other fighters too seriously. However, that cannot be said for Covington’s utter contempt for his greatest foe- Kamaru Usman. ‘Chaos’ and ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ engaged in two memorable battles back in 2019 and 2021, when both welterweights were at the height of their abilities.
But Covington feels that Usman did something so vile in their fights which truly makes him hate the former 170lbs kingpin. After all, the man himself confirmed this when asked by a fan which opponent he ‘hated most’. “Definitely Marty Juiceman [Kamaru Usman] because he’s a cheater, he’s a coward. You know he cheated multiple times in our fight. So, just can’t respect someone that cheats in a fight. I’ve never cheated, you know. I’ve done everything the right way, you know, didn’t cut corners, didn’t ask for shortcuts, had to go the long way,” Covington clarified on a live stream.

Many people, especially other fighters have a lot of problems with Covington, but no one has ever accused him of being a cheat. After all, accusing a fighter of cheating is the worst thing you say about them. Since it is seen as an unforgivable crime, especially in combat sports.
After all, in a sport people put their health and whole future on the line, getting an unfair advantage over your opponent is the nastiest thing you could do. Remember that Jorge Masvidal literally assaulted Covington a couple of years ago, but ‘Chaos’ still hates him less than Usman- that is how terrible being a cheat is among fighters. But of course, this raises an important question.

Why does Colby Covington think Usman cheated in their two fights?
To be fair to Covington, he has at least been consistent in calling Usman a cheater. After all, he had claimed Usman cheated right after their first and also the second title fight. ‘Chaos’ feels that at their first, UFC 245 clash, Usman faked an eye-poke and was given a time-out because of a wrongly-called n*t shot, both of which gave the then-undisputed champ a much-needed momentum change.
In the end, however, the Nigerian knocked out Covington in the final round, which the American thinks was an unfair stoppage. The second time around, however, Covington was even more severely and vocally aggrieved. After all, not only does ‘Chaos’ feel that Usman won an unfair unanimous decision at UFC 268, but was also subject to Usman’s alleged cheating ways.

He accused the then-champion of hitting him on the back of his head when Covington went for takedowns and feels ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ held on to the cage unfairly in the first round. Both of which affected Covington and his chain-wrestling style of fighting. Of course, many fans see this as Covington just making excuses for his losses.
But it is worth noting that Covington has never called any of his other opponents cheats, no matter how heated his feud with them may be What do you think about ‘Chaos’s accusations at Kamaru Usman? Do they hold any real weight? Tell us in the comment section below!
