Can Kai Kara-France bounce back stronger after his recent losses, or is his prime behind him?

New Zealand’s veteran flyweight fighter Kai Kara-France has been struggling to maintain consistency of late. On a 2-fight losing skid, he’s gearing up for another challenge against former title contender Steve Erceg at UFC 305 after a loss over a year ago. Before we get to that fight, Kara-France’s MMA record will be in focus today in our attempt to uncover details about his previous unsuccessful outings, and explore his chances of defeating ‘Astroboy’.

Kai Kara-France has been in the MMA game for more than a dozen years. Unfortunately, ‘Don’t Blink’ has bitten the dust several times, although he’s registered more wins than losses. But in the UFC, the 31-year-old has had just a few, starting with his failed attempts to beat Brandon Moreno.

What happened in the Kai Kara-France vs. Brandon Moreno duology?

Kai Kara-France’s UFC career started with him sailing through three contenders and earning a 3-fight winning streak. That’s when he faced his first roadblock in the form of former two-time flyweight champion Brandon Moreno. ‘The Assassin Baby’ competed against the Kiwi veteran twice in the UFC, and the first time they met, he outfought Kara-France to earn a unanimous decision win.

Kai Kara-France landed less significant strikes than Brandon Moreno, and that seemingly handed him his first UFC defeat. Thereafter, ‘Don’t Blink’s seemed to have lost momentum as he registered a defeat against Brandon Royval immediately in his next fight, and this time he got choked out by a guillotine in the second round.

Despite the setbacks, the 31-year-old bounced back hard with yet another three-fight winning streak, and call it fate or not, he found himself fighting Brandon Moreno again. However, this time, the 125lbs belt was on the line. And just like the last time, Kai Kara-France lost, not by decision but by a TKO. His fourth and final UFC loss just came in his last fight, and that seemed a bit controversial.

Controversial loss against Amir Albazi

Kai Kara-France had a very close encounter with Amir Albazi in his last fight in June 2023. However, the result created a lot of controversy because one judge had scored 48-47 in favor of the Kiwi veteran, while the other scored the same in favor of Albazi. When the third judge sided with the Iraqi fighter, the fight ended up a split decision victory for ‘The Prince’.

‘Don’t Blink’ was quick to call out the judges of this fight, angry that the loss made him lose out on a significant amount of money as he found himself getting away from the title picture as well. He firmly believed that he didn’t lose against Amir Albazi. “To have a bit of time to kind of reflect and let it sink in, look at all the stats, and watch the fight back, I lost, but I didn’t lose… That cost me $100,000, that loss. It cost me my ranking, No. 3 in the world,” Kai Kara-France stated on ‘The MMA Hour’. Now, let us take a look at his losses that didn’t take place in Dana White’s $11.3 billion promotion.

Kai Kara-France’s other losses and overall MMA record

Kai Kara-France’s first loss came at a rather early age when he was still fighting in the New Zealand circuit. In just his second professional bout, the 31-year-old succumbed to his first knockout loss, and that happened in his third professional bout as well. ‘Don’t Blink’ suffered one loss when he fought in Malaysia, and that was the time when he traveled across the world to fight under different promotions.

Kara-France would suffer his first 3-fight losing skid in late 2014 and early 2015. These losses included a failed attempt to win his first professional MMA championship. Thereafter, he would suffer his final defeat before coming into the UFC, which took place in Rizin FF against the Japanese veteran fighter, Tatsumitsu Wada.

A new fight is a new opportunity and Kai Kara-France would seek to grab a win when he fights Steve Erceg in the latter’s backyard. Do you think he’ll register yet another 3-fight losing streak? Let us know in the comments down below.
