Conor McGregor had earlier called out Justin Gaethje for a fight. However, ‘The Highlight’ stated that people only fight ‘The Notorious’ when they lose a fight. Meanwhile, he recently opened up about the only way he’d consider fighting McGregor in an interview with ESPN’s Marc Raimondi.

Justin Gaethje is on the hunt for a title shot and he has mentioned that several times. After Conor McGregor’s callout on social media, people are asking for him to fight the Irishman. However, It seems like there is only one way that the UFC could make the BMF champ fight the former double champion.

The UFC is looking to set up Islam Makhachev to fight Charles Oliveira next since the Brazilian had to pull out of UFC 294 due to injury. In the meantime, Justin Gaethje is happy to wait for his opportunity to fight for the title. When asked if he had anyone else in mind for a fight before the championship fight, the BMF champ said that there was no one left for him to fight. Then he got hit with the question about a fight against Conor McGregor, to which he quickly said, “He’s fighting Chandler.”

Conor McGregor already has an opponent that Dana White had earlier announced, and it’s Michael Chandler. Moreover, Gaethje mentioned that unless he gets a phone call from the UFC asking him to fight ‘The Notorious’, he has no intention of pushing for that fight. He added, “Until my phone rings, then I don’t care about that at all.” Gaethje also stated that fighting McGregor is not even in his plans.

Justin Gaethje doubled down on the fact that he will only fight Conor McGregor if the UFC calls him for a conversation about fighting Conor McGregor. It is because he is not interested in fighting the Irishman. He is only gunning for the title fight. He said, “If my phone rings and they wanna talk about it, then I’ll talk about it. But outside of that, I have no interest [in fighting Conor McGregor].”

However, he is willing to have a conversation with the UFC matchmakers. That way, he could propose something that would suit his needs if a fight against Conor McGregor is what the UC wants. Other than that, ‘The Notorious’ is not an option for him. “If they call my manager, then I’ll have a conversation. I don’t know what I’d do. It’s not an option,” said the BMF champ.

This is a surprising take from Gaethje, who has called out ‘The Notorious’ on numerous occasions before. His nonchalant approach to ‘red panty night’ is simply due to the fact that he has no lack of options. If you’re a 155er in the UFC, the position Justin Gaethje has put himself in is the best place to be.

Gaethje is the man to be at UFC’s 155 lbs division

With the win over Dustin Poirier at UFC 291 for the BMF title, Justin Gaethje once again proved he belongs in the upper echelons of the division. Charles Oliveira’s UFC 294 pullout and Conor McGregor’s USADA entry have further worked in his favor. Presently, Gaethje has four fight options, and all of them are as good as the next.

First, he could prioritize the title and wait his turn for a shot at Islam Makhachev. If the UFC decides to take the Oliveira route, he then fights the winner of that rematch between the Dagestani and the Brazilian, unless a trilogy somehow ensues. Second, the UFC could set up a fight between Oliveira and Gaethje, with the winner fighting Makhachev. This would give Gaethje a shot at retribution since Oliveira submitted him at UFC 274 last year.

His next option would be an immediate rematch, or a trilogy, against Dustin Poirier. Considering the two are fan favorites, that fight would entertain a large number of fans. His fourth and most lucrative option remains the returning Conor McGregor, who seems to have taken a keen interest in the BMF title.

However, the fans may never get to see Justin Gaethje fight Conor McGregor. The former had already mentioned earlier that he may not have much time left in his MMA career, which is why a title fight is what he is looking for. Meanwhile, McGregor’s UFC return is still hanging in the balance, with a few months left for his USADA testing process to be completed. We will have to wait and see how things unfold in the months to come.
