Is Jorge Masvidal's return the spark the UFC needs, or is it just wishful thinking?

After claiming to have been “robbed” in his July boxing match against Nate Diaz, former UFC fighter Jorge Masvidal has made waves once again by announcing his return to the Octagon. The news has sent ripples through the welterweight division, with fans and fighters alike wondering what’s next for the charismatic ‘Gamebred.’ While Masvidal’s future remains somewhat in limbo—largely depending on UFC President Dana White and his team—he hasn’t been shy about making his demands known.

Masvidal has squared off against nearly every big name in the UFC over the years, but there’s one showdown that fans have been eagerly awaiting: Masvidal vs. Leon Edwards. Despite their heated backstage altercation in 2019, a fight between the two has never come to fruition. However, Masvidal recently revealed that he’s not done pursuing the bout. Opening up about his latest conversation with the UFC, Masvidal shared the promotion’s reaction when he requested the fight with Edwards, hinting that the potential showdown could finally be on the horizon.

With Masvidal’s return and the long-simmering tension between him and Edwards, the possibility of the long-awaited grudge match could reignite the division—and give fans the fight they’ve been craving. Will ‘Gamebred’ get his wish, or is this matchup destined to remain a “what if”? The ball is now in the UFC’s court.

Dana White and Co’s reaction to Jorge Masvidal’s demand

This year hasn’t been great for Leon Edwards, who earlier suffered a tough loss to Belal Muhammad in a grueling welterweight fight, leaving fans concerned about what’s next for him. However, fans don’t need to worry, as Jorge Masvidal is ready to step in and face him. The long-anticipated fight between Edwards and Masvidal seemed like a perfect opportunity for both fighters.

Unfortunately, UFC’s Hunter Campbell doesn’t share the same view, as revealed by Masvidal in a recent interview with ESPN MMA. When asked if he had requested Edwards as his next opponent, Masvidal said, “Of course, I did. Man, the first thing I told his (Hunter’s) a–yeah, they shut it down. Said they won’t do that. Okay, we’ll see who’s next, you know. But yeah, all this ranking and all. How are your gonna skip the line? Since you’ve been in diapers.”

For those who don’t know, the feud between Leon Edwards and ‘Gamebred’ is not new, it’s been brewing for six years. It didn’t start in the octagon but backstage when Masvidal sucker punched Edwards in London. While Edwards still hasn’t forgotten the incident, Masvidal insists it wasn’t personal and says he’s moved on. However, he can’t say the same about his friend-turned-rival, Colby Covington.

Jorge Masvidal never forgave Colby Covington

Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington share a similar outspoken and fiery nature, which is why they were close friends and trained together at American Top Team. However,  their relationship took a turn for the worse, leaving a lasting scar. According to ‘Gamebred’, Covington used his boxing coach for free during his early training days and, once he started earning well, left town without paying the coach.

Masvidal shared this on the Jake Paul B.S podcast, revealing, “With me and Leon, it was never personal.” He further added, “On top of that, [Colby] ripped off my coach of the five percent that he owed him per fight when he finally made a check. Instead of paying out my coach, what did he do? Skipped out of town. F** you twice motherf**. That’s my coach.”

What are your thoughts on Hunter Campbell’s decision? Do you think Jorge Masvidal deserves a fight with Leon Edwards, even though he hasn’t been very active in the UFC this year? Considering ‘Gamebred’ has dedicated 20 years to the promotion, does that merit a non-title fight? Drop your opinion in the comments below.
