Tom Aspinall just made himself undeniable! In the UFC 304 heavyweight co-main event, the Brit knocked out opponent Curtis Blaydes in a rare interim title defense to stake his claim as the rightful title challenger. But after that performance, many believe Aspinall has given Jon Jones all the more reason to sidestep him.
“Hello Jon, I have nothing against you personally. But I just think I’m better than you. I just know that I can beat you in a fight. So I’m coming for you,” Aspinall told Daniel Cormier during his Octagon interview earlier tonight. ‘Honey Badger’ badgered Blaydes inside the opening round to mark his second first-round finish in a UFC title fight, back to back! Now, this was the fight Jones himself had dubbed the #1 contended bout, although it may have been to dismiss Aspinall’s incessant callouts to replace Stipe Miocic.
Rumors are that the undisputed champion Jon Jones will take on Miocic in November this year. CEO Dana White himself confirmed at the UFC 304 presser a few days ago that the winner of UFC 304 co-main will take on the winner of Miocic vs. Jones. A few months ago, Jones claimed that the Aspinall vs. Blaydes fight is more of a contender’s match than a title fight, thereby disregarding the interim title that Aspinall just defended. Well, the fans have spoken, and the 37-year-old may not be too happy with what they had to say.

“Curtis versus Tom for the official number one contender spot!” This tweet resurfaced on social media ahead of the co-headlining Tom Aspinall vs Curtis Blaydes matchup at the Co-op Live arena in Manchester. Jon Jones tweeted this when Dana White made the interim title fight official earlier this year, in May, to be exact.
This comment from Jon Jones came after Tom Aspinall called him out multiple times, following which the two-weight champ decided to throw some shade at the interim champion. Besides, he wasn’t wrong at all. We must remember that holding the interim belt already means Aspinall is the number one contender, but Jones decided to downplay the English star’s claim to the undisputed title.

When fans came across this comment, they seemed to have had enough of Jon Jones’s antics, and guess what? They ripped into the undisputed heavyweight champion on Instagram. Let’s have a look at what the UFC fanbase had to say about his claims.
Fans clapped back at Jon Jones for downplaying UFC 304’s interim title fight
There are a lot of UFC fans, hardcore ones, who understand how much Jon Jones has contributed to this sport, which was termed “human cockfighting” back in the day. Hence, one fan stated, “Respectfully this is a Heavyweight Championship fight in my eyes,” siding with Tom Aspinall, who’s been more active than ‘Bones’. However, there were some other fans who took a rather direct and stern approach in reminding Jones about the reality of the UFC 304 clash. “No Jon this is for the heavyweight championship,” said another fan. For them, Aspinall vs Curtis Blaydes is the real deal, the real championship fight.

Ahead of the fight, Aspinall had said to FOX Sports, “I’m still going to be an interim champion if I win this Saturday. But you know what? I think, let’s make no mistake, this fight is for the best heavyweight, the number one heavyweight in the world.”
Some fans even claimed that Jon Jones lost his championship status among fans due to his sabbatical, given that he’s fought only once in over four years. An Instagram user stated, “No one actually thinks your the champ dawg.” Also, even if Tom Aspinall secures the win at Manchester, fans don’t believe Jones would go ahead and clash against the interim champion. “That he’ll still refuse to fight.” Now, why would that fan think like that? Well, Jones has shown little to no interest in fighting Aspinall when they were having their back-and-forth on social media. Fans believe a certain light heavyweight champion could find himself standing across the Octagon against Jones. “Jon acting as if he’s not gonna either retire or push to fight Pereira instead of Aspinall.”

So far, Jon Jones has fought just one heavyweight contender, which was a title fight. Meanwhile, Aspinall put in the work, climbing the ranks to become the interim champion at UFC 295. That, for fans, seems to matter a lot. “The real heavyweight champ Aspinall, who earned it by beating lots of heavyweight opponents,” another fan added. Meanwhile, certain sections of fans believe Tom Aspinall may have Jones’s number. “Jon sh*tting his pants,” an Instagram user added.
What do you think? Dana White has already given the nod about the winner of UFC 304’s co-main event will take on the undisputed champion. Do you think Jon Jones will go ahead with those plans if he beats Stipe Miocic? Drop your comments below.
