Is Jon Jones justified in demanding 'f*** you' money, or is he dodging Tom Aspinall?

Jon Jones just won’t accept a fight against Tom Aspinall even though Dana White assured the fans the winner of the UFC 309 headliner would face the English export next. The 28-1 legend has seemingly done everything there is to do in a sport as young as MMA, so he doesn’t feel the need to put himself inside the cage against a younger up-and-comer unless his conditions are met.

With nine former champions defeated in 13 title fight wins, and two divisions captured and defended – what more’s left for a 37-year-old Jon Jones to prove? Well, nothing, apparently – at least, that’s what ‘Bones’ thinks. The undisputed champion is chasing legacy, and that’s why he has his sights on Alex Pereira, who also happens to be same age as Jones. The only thing that the supposed greatest of all time wants, if he fights Tom Aspinall, is to be compensated well, or in ‘Bones’ words, he wants “f**k you” money. Brendan Schaub, while discussing this on his YouTube podcast, believes the sum Jones is asking for could very well amount to $20 million.

“He doesn’t need to beat Aspinall to be considered the greatest of all time, and that’s the advantage Jon has,” Brendan Schaub stated on ‘The Fighter and The Kid’ podcast. “He made six [million] for this. So, I bet he’s going to ask for like 15 to 20 mil. It’ll be the biggest UFC heavyweight title fight of all time.” In comparison, the UFC’s biggest star ever, Conor McGregor, took three big victories to reach around the $20 million total mark for the first time. This is certainly a big ask.

Despite what the venue or the undercard looks like, Brendan Schaub has placed his money on the fact that the Jon Jones vs Tom Aspinall will absolutely deliver, much like what Dana White had to say about the prospect of this heavyweight matchup. But the only thing that matters for Jon Jones is to get some sort of benefit out of this fight. “They could do it at Wembley Stadium [or] they could do it anywhere they want, but you got to pay him that,” Brendan Schaub added“Make the rest of the card trash. Make it whatever you want. Do it like the Sphere. Make it bullsh*t and have that main event. UFC’s gonna have to bend the knee to Jon.”

Well, ‘bending the knee’ or not, Tom Aspinall doesn’t seem too worried about it. The English star claims that there have been positive indications about his fight against Jon Jones after UFC 309.

Tom Aspinall reveals Dana White’s non-verbal message about the Jon Jones fight after UFC 309

Jon Jones didn’t acknowledge the interim champion during his post-fight speech following his win over Stipe Miocic. However, he did mention that he’s looking to see if he can give the fans the fight that they want, which may allude to the title-unifying bout against Tom Aspinall. Jones would later appear at the press conference and maintain his stance on that big fight, but Aspinall claimed that during Jones’ UFC 309 post-fight speech, Dana White locked eyes with him in Madison Square Garden, and winked at him, indicating that the CEO is trying to make this fight come to fruition.

“I’ll tell you a bit of an exclusive news right here on TNT Sports. I was getting a few nods and winks [from] the bosses when Jon Jones was talking about the next fight. That means a lot to me, and not only that, I spoke to [the] UFC brass this week. Both guys [the matchmakers] were talking about – ‘this is going to be the biggest heavyweight fight in UFC history – absolutely no doubt about it’. Potentially, one of the biggest fights in UFC history,” Aspinall told ‘TNT Sports’.
