Is Jon Jones the UFC's missing piece, or should we move on from his era?

It seems like everybody wants to fight Jon Jones lately! The undisputed UFC heavyweight champion has been out of action with a pectoral tendon tear that happened before his fight against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295 in late 2023. Due to Jones’s injury, Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich faced off for the interim title instead, with Aspinall coming out on top.

With Jones being out of commission, Aspinall has cemented his interim title reign with a win over Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 recently. After the devastating first round finish, at the post-fight press conference, Aspinall stated, “Jon’s the undisputed champion, but I’m the best in the world, if that makes any sense.”

However, that’s not the only matchup in the cards as Haliey Welch, known for her viral ‘Hawk Tuah’ clip has made a bold call-out! In a recent video shared on social media, the viral internet star can be seen hitting pads and getting some Muay Thai experience under her belt. Welch ends the video by stating, “Jon Jones, where you at motherf**ker” and in the caption of the post on X, she called out the UFC boss as she wrote, “Sign me up Dana White!”

But Jones’s return is still set to be against Miocic, the former undisputed heavyweight champion who has been out of action since losing his title to Francis Ngannou in 2021. During a recent interview with Kevin Iole, UFC boss Dana White affirmed that, “It’s a fight that they both want to happen. Total respect fight. I think they both deserve it.” Meanwhile, Welch’s latest video has drawn a massive wave of responses from the MMA sphere with many fans stunned at the call-out. Here’s a look at what the netizens had to say.

Fans left scratching their heads as Jon Jones and Dana White get called out by ‘Hawk Tuah’ Girl

One fan cheekily pointed out that there’s a less than zero chance that Haliey Welch finds herself in the Octagon with Jon Jones. But despite the humorous jab, UFC boss Dana White has already indicated that, “Everybody wants to see Tom Aspinall, but let me tell you what, after Stipe and Jon fight, whoever wins, the Aspinall fight is even bigger.”

Others were left confused at the cross-over between Welch and the UFC. She gained notoriety overnight as a viral video of her responding to a question on the street took over the internet. With memes, edits and more featuring the famous ‘Hawk Tua’ moment, Welch currently has 2.3 million followers on Instagram, highlighting her massive popularity.

Some fans brought up the fact that Hasbulla Magomedov, another viral Internet sensation was also reported to have been signed to a contract by the UFC in 2022. According to a report shared at the time by Igor Lazorin, an MMA insider, it was revealed that, “Hasbulla signed a five-year contract with UFC! So far in the plan – attending tournaments, media activity.”

Meanwhile some indicated that Welch looks ready to take on Paige VanZant in a bare knuckle boxing match. While the fan proposed bout has a slightly higher chance of happening than Welch vs Jones, VanZant recently made her debut in slap fighting at Power Slap 8. So maybe a slap fighting bout is the way to go?

Fans also pointed out that the large number of negative responses in the comments are “crazy”. But with the UFC’s massive popularity, it’d make sense why internet personalities would be interested in trying to collaborate with the promotion.

Another fan brought up a hilarious mental image! Bruce Buffer, the iconic voice of the Octagon announcing Welch using her now iconic catch-phrase ‘Hawk Tuah’ as her in-cage moniker. While it may not be as intimidating as Curtis ‘Razor’ Blaydes or ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler, it’d be another viral moment if the proposed scenario becomes reality!
