Jon Jones spent almost his entire career reigning over the 205lbs division of the UFC. Tall and lanky for his size, his frame and athleticism are huge reasons he has had so much success in the promotion and is considered the MMA GOAT.
But in the last phase of his career, the New Mexico resident decided to move to heavyweight and end his career there. Which, of course, included putting on a lot of weight, which was no easy task. In this article, we take a look at how Jones put on all that weight and what his walkaround weight is at the moment.

Back in his light heavyweight days, Jon Jones used to walk around at 235 pounds when not cutting for a fight. For his heavyweight debut, the former 205-pound champion bulked up quite a lot. He officially weighed in at 248 pounds for his UFC 285 clash against Ciryl Gane, where he won the heavyweight title. At his heaviest, Jones seems to have put on 13 pounds over his light heavyweight walkaround weight.
Since Jones weighs well under the 270-pound heavyweight limit, his fight weight is similar to his walkaround weight. Right now, Jones is 240 pounds, for reasons we will see more in-depth later.
Of course, bulking up thirteen pounds might seem like a not-too-challenging task for a fighter who used to walk around at 235 pounds. But that is not the case. After all, ‘Bones’ wanted to not just gain weight, but wanted all of that weight to be lean muscle mass. And that took a lot of hard work.

In fact, ‘Bones’ spent around three years trying to bulk up ‘the right way’. He even hired powerlifter Stan ‘The White Rhino’ Efferding, who lived and trained with him for nine months to make sure Jones had the size to take on the heaviest guys in the entire promotion. But for his upcoming clash against legendary former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, Jones is coming in at a different weight from his Gane fight.

Jon Jones reveals weight ahead of UFC 309 title clash
Jon Jones has confirmed that he has slimmed down a bit from his UFC 285 clash against Cyril Gane last year. The former 205-pound champ took to Instagram recently and revealed that he is now at 240-pounds. “240 pounds, fast and strong. I used to walk around at 235lbs as a light heavyweight. This almost feels like a light heavyweight fight without the weight cut,” he wrote.
Of course, the heavyweight champ performed very well at 248lbs but it seems like he has traded in some of his mass for more athleticism and speed. To be fair, Jones has admitted in a recent interview that his recent injury and the long period of inactivity have sapped some of the strength he felt going into the Gane fight but has other attributes that he hopes will carry him to victory at UFC 309 against Stipe Miocic.

Thankfully, since MSG’s legacy bout is expected to be his last fight, Jones will not have to keep pushing himself much longer. After all, a 4500+ calorie diet, with six meals a day, along with intense power-lifting sessions (which is how Jones put on his mass) doesn’t seem very enjoyable. But to be the best, you have to work harder than everyone else.
And that is what Jones has done, even when putting on weight. What do you think about Jon Jones’s walkaround weight? Do you think he is doing the right thing by going into the Miocic fight at 240 pounds? Tell us in the comment section below!
