The heavyweight championship fight was scheduled between Jon Jones and Stipe Miočić. However, due to Jones suffering an injury prior to the fight, Aspinall and Pavlovich stepped up to fight for an interim title. The British heavyweight secured the UFC gold by beating Pavlovich at UFC 295. But the interim title has brought nothing but chaos to the division.

Since the UFC now has two champions in the heavyweight division, there has been quite some unease in the division. Ideally, the two champions face off to unify the title. But in the case of the heavyweights, there’s an outside factor that disrupts the process of unifying the titles.

The interim champ slams UFC for not getting a unification bout

Tom Aspinall, just like any other interim champion in the past, expects to fight the champion, in this case Jon Jones, for undisputed status. However, the Head Honcho of the UFC, Dana White, plans for Jones to defend his belt against Stipe Miočić when he returns from injury. But if Jones fights Miočić, where does it leave the newly crowned interim champion, Tom Aspinall?

Aspinall compares the Jones and Miočić situation to Mayweather and Pacquiao, implying that no one would care in 5 years about the fight. “That’s the way boxing works. Look at people like Pacquiao and Mayweather. Okay, five years on who’s asked anymore?” a frustrated Aspinall tells Geordie.

The British heavyweight, Tom Aspinall, explains that he doesn’t wish to stay stagnant and not fight while Jon Jones and Stipe Miočić settle their fight. Aspinall proceeds to make a call out to Jones, stating, “It’s not right. Like there can’t be fu**ing two heavyweight champions. There can’t be. this isn’t boxing. There’s one guy, there’s one face, one name, and let’s find out who that is.”

It happens very rarely that an interim champion fails to secure a unification fight with the champion. But though it’s a rare case, it has happened in the past. Tom Aspinall’s frustration seems validated. Especially with Miočić getting the priority despite not having a win in the last 3 years.

Tom Aspinall on why he wants to fight Jon Jones and Stipe Miočić

Tom Aspinall claims in an interview with TNT Sports that he has 10 more years in the sport. However, the same cannot be said for the greatest MMA fighter of all time, Jon Jones, or the greatest heavyweight MMA fighter of all time, Stipe Miočić. With both fighters fighting in the UFC for over a decade, Aspinall does not expect them to stick around the Octagon for long.

The interim champ believes that there’s only a small window open for him to fight either fighter. This is why Tom Aspinall aims to fight Jones and Miočić before they retire from the sport. Aspinall believes that he has the tools to beat both fighters and wants a win over them to build up his resume.
