Can Stipe Miocic defy the odds and dethrone Jon Jones at UFC 309's epic showdown?

The UFC 309 main event has been dubbed a clash between the h͏eavyweight GOAT and t͏he consensus M͏MA GOAT; the highly anticipa͏ted 265-pound title defense bet͏we͏en͏ Stipe͏ Miocic and J͏on ͏Jone͏s goes down in a few hours at the iconic Madison Square Garden. Despite the negativity and the lack of optimism about the matchup, it’s still pretty big and today we will show you why.

Comparing Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic’s weight, height, reach, and more

͏Before we jump into the Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic numbers, let’s look at a Madison Square Garden trend. As far as MSG main events in the UFC go, the favorites (usually the defending champions) tend to win their bouts. The same was true for Conor McGregor, Georges St.Pierre, Alex Pereira, Jorge Masvidal, and Daniel Cormier. But for champions defending their titles in main events, the numbers are not as strong. Israel Adesanya, Eddie Alvarez, and Michael Bisping have dropped their titles at MSG main events. Now why did we tell you this?

Jon Jones is the favorite to win the clash but is it good to underestimate Stipe Miocic, who has a record of defeating champions? Well, maybe not. Miocic is the only fighter on the promotion to ever beat Francis Ngannou as well as Daniel Cormier in the heavyweight division, so it would be unwise to think Jones would have it easy.

An older Alex Pereira walked in as the underdog against middleweight elite Adesanya at UFC 281 and won the fight in the final moments of the final round. Who’s to say Miocic can’t either?

Now, let us have a look at Jon Jones; the fighter has an undefeated record if we were to remove the Matt Hamil DQ defeat and he is the former light-heavyweight and current heavyweight champion. Jones came in at ͏237.6 lbs for the main event against Miocic, 111 lbs lighter than the challenger.͏ He͏ ͏stan͏ds͏ 6’4″ (194cm) t͏all ͏wit͏h a re͏͏ac͏h of ͏ 84.5″ (215cm).

Jones has a reach advantage that made him dangerous to light heavyweight foes. Joe Rogan commented on the same a few days ago. “…he’s not relatively bulky compared to his weight ‘cuz he’s long and stretched out yeah so he can hit you from here and you can only hit him from here. This amount of distance is so huge… you have to cross that and you’re so vulnerable while crossing that,” he said.

But Miocic is a natural heavyweight who has enough boxing skills and power to put away the likes of Mark Hunt, Fabricio Werdum, and Daniel Cormier among others. His fight IQ has seen him adapt well in fights too. So it’s hard to see Jones risking a striking battle with Miocic. Remember he took down Ciryl Gane the first chance he got?

Well, now that we know about their height, reach, and more, let us have a look at the quality of the opponents they fought.

In comparison to Miocic, Jon Jones has a clean record as he has yet to be officially defeated by anyone under the promotion. Jones is one of the most dominant fighters to ever walk on the face of the earth and his championship records just speak for himself. Some of the best wins by ‘Bones’ are Daniel Cormier, Alexander Gustafsson, Lyota Machida, Quinton Jackson, and many more.

But his February 2020 bout against Dominick Reyes is still disputed. Many believe Reyes won the fight although the judges scored in favor of Jones. Incidentally, that was also Jones’ last LHW bout.

Well, now that we know about their records, let us have a look at their title defenses.

W͏͏ho has had more title defenses?

Stipe Miocic holds the record for the most UFC heavyweight title defenses, with a total of 4 successful defenses. He also holds the record for the most consecutive heavyweight title defenses with three during his first reign. In his heavyweight title defense, Miocic has defeated Alistair Overeem, Junior Dos Santos, and Francis Ngannou. He lost his belt when he fought against Daniel Cormier at UFC 226 but he regained the belt when he fought again at UFC 241. He defended his belt against ‘DC’ once again at UFC 252 but lost it against Francis Ngannou at UFC 260.

Jon Jones, on the other hand, has defended his light heavyweight title a total of 11 times across two reigns, establishing himself as one of the greatest in UFC history. When comparing their achievements, Jones clearly has more title defenses overall, despite competing in different weight classes. Jones was the youngest fighter to ever hold the championship belt as he defeated Mauricio Rua back when he was just 23 to become the light-heavyweight champion.

Regardless, will he be able to successfully defend this Saturday or will Stipe Miocic become a three-time world champion? State your thoughts in the comments below.
