In recent interviews, Jon Jones expressed that he’s achieved everything he set out to do in MMA, from dominating the light heavyweight division to capturing the heavyweight title. With his future family goals and a desire to leave the sport on his own terms, retirement has become a very real possibility. While Jones remains focused on UFC 309, where he’ll defend his heavyweight title, the idea of walking away from the sport on top, after this fight, isn’t far from his mind.
The UFC CEO appreciates his efforts and feels ‘Bones’ has nothing to prove in his career. However, during an interview with TMZ Sports, he shared his opinion on the retirement calls. White said, “I won’t be shocked if he said, [I’ll] retire tomorrow night. That wouldn’t shock me at all I mean. He’s earned it I mean the guys 37-38 year’s old now. He’s beat everybody. He’s never lost [in] 16 years. The youngest champion of all time right. And when you think about the gauntlet of people that he went through at the light heavyweight division and how he finished them. It wouldn’t surprise me and it would s–k but it wouldn’t surprise me.”

Known for his dynamic skill set, high fight IQ, and ability to adapt in the Octagon, Jon Jones became the youngest fighter to ever win a UFC championship. At just 23 years old, he claimed the light heavyweight title in 2011. His reign over the division was nearly untouchable, with victories over legends like Shogun Rua, Daniel Cormier, and Alexander Gustafsson. Jones’ versatility, combining unorthodox striking, exceptional wrestling, and world-class submissions, made him a nightmare for opponents.

The champion is currently focused on his next opponent, Stipe Miocic, who is a legend in his own right. ‘Bones’ is aware of the threats possessed by ‘Stone Cold’ and is leaving no stones unturned. While there is a lot of respect between the pair things took a turn slightly after Miocic made some comments about his children. He even refused to shake his hands at the UFC 309 presser. But it seems he has now changed his tune after the weigh-ins.
Jon Jones decides to ‘forgive’ Stipe Miocic before their legendary clash
In the lead-up to the bout with Jones, Stipe Miocic had taken things a bit far, even by his own standards. Miocic made comments about Jones’ kids not respecting him, and also referring to him as a ‘b—h’ in the countdown promo. Trash talk is an integral part of the game and the former heavyweight champion knows that, but he didn’t appreciate the slur directed his way, nor the comments about his family. This animosity Jones carried manifested at the UFC 309 presser where he refused to shake Miocic’s hand. However, things seemed to have changed within 24 hours at the ceremonial weigh-ins.

Jones ended up shaking his opponent’s hand and this change in attitude surprised most fans out there. However, he does have his reasons behind it and said, “I felt like forgiveness is the right thing to do. I made it very clear that I was disappointed in the way that he made me feel. I know that he knows what he said. And at the end of the day, I wanted to show forgiveness.” While the 37-year-old decided to let it go, the fight is still personal for him. ‘Bones’ feels he has a legacy to protect and will put his best foot forward at Madison Square Garden against Miocic.
