Dana White has seldom backed away from praising Jon Jones and lifting him up as the greatest fighter of all time. He even went to great lengths to stand against the committee that created the athlete rankings and dissed them for not putting Jones at the top of the list. The UFC head honcho indeed seems to believe that the heavyweight champ doesn’t need to prove anything anymore. After all, White has claimed that ‘Bones’ has remained undefeated, with his only loss being the result of disqualification.

White’s peculiar stand for his fighter has created quite an uproar in the fighting community. At this point in time, it has become obvious who the UFC boss would name if asked about the pound-for-pound number 1. And the same happened when UFC 306 caught the attention of the entire fighting realm.

As the Riyadh Season Noche UFC proceeded in style, one of the fans was lucky enough to be near the way that White was walking. He took the chance and shouted, “Who’s the pound-for-pound GOAT?” But as the UFC head honcho continued to walk away, the fan went wild and kept shouting “No”. White had to turn back and name the GOAT. He shouted back, “Jon Jones!”

The video of this incident soon found its way to social media and garnered quite a bit of attention from the fighting community. Soon enough, ‘Bones’ stumbled upon it. He shared the viral video on his Instagram story and tagged the UFC CEO. In the caption, the heavyweight champion wrote, “let em know boss man!

Jones currently has a record of 21 wins and just one defeat in his UFC career. He has fought and defeated names that were once looked at with nothing but fear. Be it Shogun Rua, or Ciryl Gane, the 37-year-old mixed martial artist walked through them with ease. This was the reason why White looked at him as the greatest fighter of all time.

But there was an instance when White had to take a different approach to his P4P view. Let’s take a look at that.

UFC CEO claims that ‘Bones’ being the P4P king is not important

In an interview with ‘Grind City Media’ on YouTube, the UFC boss stood up once again for the UFC 2-division champion. However, his words were a bit different this time. He said, “It’s [calling Jon Jones #1 pound-for-pound fighter is] not important. Jon Jones could say I’m never going to fight again or it could be after his next fight. These are all facts. I mean, I even laid them out in a commercial for all the stupid people that can’t wrap their head around it, you know. I was on a podcast this morning and I was talking about this.”

Nevertheless, White has stuck to his opinion about the pound-for-pound rankings. And now, he has let the heavyweight champion have yet another chance to prove how strong he is. Jones is now scheduled to fight Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 and defend his heavyweight title for the first time.
