Is Jon Jones dodging a fight with Tom Aspinall, or is he right to focus on Miocic?

Manchester City today witnessed the astonishing heavyweight bout at UFC 304, which included the UFC interim title fight between Tom Aspinall and Curtis Blaydes in their rematch. Aspinall used his speed to knock out Blaydes in the first round, bringing him one step closer to his dream of a title unification against Jon Jones. Without wasting time, Aspinall called out Jon Jones in front of the  Manchester audience, saying, “I’m the best finisher in the UFC, if I start to snowball you, you’re done. Who wants to see Tom Aspinall v Jon Jones?”

Jones, who hadn’t responded to Tom Aspinall’s callout until now, posted on X, “Supply and demand at its finest, I love it,” suggesting a metaphorical acceptance of Aspinall’s challenge. However, this post comes after Dana White announced that Tom Aspinall will be the backup fighter for the Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic fight in November at Madison Square.

Despite consistently calling out Jones, who was recovering from an injury, Aspinall was repeatedly ducked and eventually stopped calling him out, focusing instead on Curtis Blaydes. Now, after defeating Blaydes, his hopes for a title shot are high again.

There’s an old saying: there’s no tax on dreaming. Tom Aspinall perfectly exemplified this after UFC 304. Riding high from his recent victory over Curtis Blaydes, who was coming off a win against Jailton Almeida and was a strong contender for the interim title, Aspinall returned to his usual post-fight habit of calling out top UFC names. This time, he boldly challenged Jon Jones, Lex Pereira, and Stipe Miocic to face him in the same octagon.

In the interview with the media after securing his 8th UFC victory, Tom Aspinall stated, “Here’s a thought for you. I was thinking about this today. They’re saying that Stipe [Miocic] and Jon Jones are going to fight in MSG [Madison Square Garden] in November. Why don’t we do a tournament? We’ll do Jon, Stipe, me, Alex [Pereira] and do a four-man tournament, two fights in one night, and let’s find out who the real heavyweight champion of the world is.”
