Is Jon Jones risking his legacy by underestimating Tom Aspinall's rising prowess?

Jon Jones has sent shockwaves through the world of combat sports with a few words at Riyadh Season Noche UFC. The heavyweight champion is set to return against Stipe Miocic and defend his championship title. However, declaring that it would be his last fight was something that the fight fans didn’t expect. After all, he is yet to face the interim heavyweight champion.

Despite what ‘Bones’ had to say, the UFC head honcho assured the fighting community that the MMA promotion would definitely feature a fight between Aspinall and Jones. But Dana White’s opinion was contradicted by Daniel Cormier. As the confusion went on rising, Chael Sonnen swooped in to calm the fight fans down with his analysis.

While many fight fans and professionals believe Jones’ apparent retirement after UFC 309, ‘The American Gangster’ didn’t fall into the trap. And it was because of two words. Soon after the world of mixed martial arts went into a frenzy, the former fighter took to his talk show and revealed his insights.

Chael Sonnen said, “Jon says, ‘This is gonna be my last time’. He’s talking about his fight with Stipe. He doesn’t stop with ‘This will be my last time’, he adds ‘most likely’. Everything is gone! Right? As soon as you say most likely, it’s like including the word could. You have said nothing! We could wake up on Mars tomorrow! But could. When I watched Jon do this, it’s like, ‘yeah, there he is. Welcome back’.”

This was indeed something that ‘The Bad Guy’ didn’t appreciate. He simply doesn’t believe Jon Jones doesn’t want to fight Tom Aspinall. Instead, he believed that ‘Bones’ was putting the matchup in jeopardy. Sonnen continued, “Jon keeps talking about ‘I’m gonna be retiring, I’m not gonna fight Aspinall’. It’s going to become more of a thing. Not only does he run the jeopardy of convincing himself, Aspinall might just get on with it. He got kids and a wife at home. I’m sure lots of guys don’t wanna show up for work. It doesn’t work that way!”

Have an interesting take?

Even though the former light heavyweight contender tried to assure the fight fans that Jones would not retire anytime soon, Daniel Cormier happened to believe his former opponent. It simply added up to the champion’s desire not to fight ‘Honey Badger’ anymore. But there was a catch in DC’s voice!

Daniel Cormier weighs in on Jones’ retirement

Not too long ago, the UFC commentator sat down together with Ben Askren and one of the topics that the duo discussed was ‘Bones’ claiming that he would be done after fighting Stipe Miocic at Madison Square Garden. While DC initially believed that Jones didn’t want to fight anymore, the amount of money that came with a matchup between Aspinall and Jones might convince the legendary MMA fighter to stay and compete.

“The guy’s obviously doing well, probably just doesn’t want to fight anymore. So what happens, right? You walk away,” Cormier opined. “I believe that when push comes to shove, they might nudge him if he gets through Stipe. They nudge you, they nudge you, they nudge you, and then you end up getting more money and then you ultimately fight.”

Nevertheless, Dana White defended the fans’ desire at the press conference for UFC 306. He has guaranteed that the UFC would ensure a fight between Jones and Aspinall. Now all that we need to do, is wait and watch! Do you think Jon Jones will retire after UFC 306? What are your thoughts on Sonnen’s analysis? Let us know what you think in the comments down below.
