The fact that Jon Jones discarded a potential matchup against Tom Aspinall has triggered many fans across several social media platforms. Some even went on to theorize that ‘Bones’ is perhaps ‘ducking’ Tom Aspinall. However, one of Jones’ former rivals believes that Jones may not exactly be afraid of the interim heavyweight champion, but might just not see the allure of fighting the Englishman for his legacy maybe because he just doesn’t feel like he has anything more to achieve in this sport.
During a recent appearance on SiriusXM Fight Nation, former light heavyweight champion and UFC Hall of Famer Rashad Evans shared his take as to why Jon Jones doesn’t feel like fighting Tom Aspinall. ‘Suga’ Evans believes that ‘Bones’ might be planning for what lies after his UFC career following his UFC 309 clash against Stipe Miocic – “I think his mind is on the next phase of his life that you’ve only got so much mental capacity to even drive, take that fight,” Rashad Evans stated.
“He’s always been one of those athletes who, you know, was trying to chase his own greatness, trying to chase his own legacy and literally trying to put space between him and everybody in the division.”, continued Evans.

As we all know, Jones has beaten the cream of the crop in the light heavyweight division. He then stunned fans and clinched an unsurprisingly dominating win against Ciryl Gane, to etch his name in UFC history as one of the few two-weight champions. So what lies ahead of the supposed greatest of all time? According to the former light heavyweight champ, Jones may have lost his thirst to do any more than he already has after all his accomplishments – “There’s a drive that comes with that, and I don’t feel like he has that drive anymore.”.

Ahead of his legacy fight against the former 2-time heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic, Jon Jones shed some light on his repeated hints of retiring after UFC 309. As much as he’s been visualizing calling it a career, the 37-year-old doesn’t seem too sure about what he’s going to do after fighting Miocic. However, in a logical sense, Jones is looking forward to how his fight pans out this weekend, which will play a vital role in his decision going forward.

“You know, I feel like I’ve been debating on whether I’m going to retire or not. I really don’t know if I’m going to retire or not. I feel like I’m basing a lot of whether I retire or not on my performance,” Jon Jones told ‘ESPN MMA’. This statement could raise Tom Aspinall‘s hopes, whose only concern is to beat the best so that he can be recognized as the best heavyweight of this era. Or it could mean, Jones is well on his way to sidelining Aspinall once more in favor of an Alex Pereira match-up.
It will be interesting to see if what Rashad Evans said about Jon Jones turns out to be true this weekend. Nevertheless, drop in the comments your thoughts on this situation with ‘Bones’.
