Is Jon Jones truly clean, or are his rivals right to question his picogram levels?

Jon Jones, arguably the greatest heavyweight ever, at least according to head honcho Dana White, often finds himself in controversial and troubling situations. While he’s been dealing with a legal problem of late, he’s also had trouble with substance as well, and of course, failing drug tests. However, UFC legend Chael Sonnen evaluated the situation which led him to make a stunning revelation about his former rival and the current heavyweight king.

When Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier clashed for the second time, the former registered a head kick knockout that ended their rivalry, at least, inside the cage. However, that win was marred by the revelation that the arguably greatest UFC fighter of all time tested positive for a banned substance, which Chael Sonnen believes wasn’t intentional.

There isn’t much of a friendly relationship between Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones. They were fierce rivals after all. But at times, ‘The American Gangster’ has often sided with the controversial UFC star. This time, Sonnen’s sticking his neck out for Jones once again. The substance USADA found in ‘Bones’s body was Turinabol, and that inadvertently led to the rematch with Daniel Cormier getting overturned to a no-contest, especially due to the picogram level being low.

“You might remember when Jon Jones went down on Turinabol. But we knew that Jon did not take Trenbolone, not on purpose,” Chael Sonnen stated on his YouTube channel. Interestingly, Turinabol is as rare as they come, and it may not be available as easily as some of the other substances are. Sonnen also claims that Turinabol is not something that most people would prefer to take either.

“You’ll have to visit a museum to find Turinabol, and all the options that you would have before you got to that, you just would not take that one did not willingly or knowingly take Turinabol. The one with the picogram, that I can assure you,” said Chael Sonnen about Jon Jones.

Although it ensued several years ago, Jon Jones once called for sought to overturn the no-contest decision. Interestingly, that happened in 2023, before he made his return after three long years against Ciryl Gane.

Jon Jones’s dominant display at UFC 285 might make people forget what about the turn of events a few weeks prior to his triumphant return. USADA’s rulebook went through some serious changes after some re-evaluating work, especially the picogram issue. For Jones, this was the opportunity to make his case, and so he did. The reigning champion urged the commission to change the decision of the rematch once again and hand him the win that he thinks he deserves.

It was a subtle call from Jon Jones, posting just a tweet regarding that matter. However, the decision remains unchanged and it’s still a no-contest. Realistically, it is unlikely that a fight that happened before the rules were changed would be a matter of reconsideration for the commission, especially because it caters to banned substances. The rivalry is clearly put to bed and so is the decision of that fight.
