Recently Joe Rogan had talked about how he thinks they can use a tie as a weapon in any combat scenario. Rogan talked about how wearing a tie in a street fight scenario could be a disadvantage. The conversation did not end there as Lex Fridman talked about the same to Georges St-Pierre.
GSP was also not in favor of wearing a tie during a combat scenario as that might give your opponent a chance to grab it and use it to pull you down. However, Fridman, who is a well-renowned AI researcher, believed that it is ridiculous to believe that they can use a tie that effectively in a combat situation.
Recently Fridman talked about the same to John Danaher, Fridman questioned Danaher about what he thinks about wearing a tie in a combat situation. Danaher disagreed with Rogan and talked about what he thinks about the same.

He said, “Okay, first of I can speak with experience on this because I worked as a bouncer for over a decade. Most of the clubs I worked at did not require a suit and tie, but occasionally they did.
“Okay, let’s first differentiate between the kinds of threats when you wear a tie. If you wear a tie, if there is going to be a threat by far the more important threat is not strangulation. Okay, being strangulated by your tie is possible, but it is a poor choice.”
Danaher is one of the best Jiu-Jitsu and MMA instructors out there and holds a 4th-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Danaher has worked in many Manhattan nightclubs as a bouncer and thus has plenty of experience in street combat situations.

Georges St-Pierre also believes that wearing a tie during combat can be a disadvantage
When Fridman talked to GSP about it, the former champion shared his views on the tie choke thing. While GSP did not believe that a tie choke was a problem, he still believed that wearing a tie could be disadvantageous. The UFC legend talked about how someone could pull you down using the tie and then use their knee to hurt you.
Fridman disagreed with GSP and said how all of this is ridiculous. Meanwhile, Danaher did not completely disagree with GSP, but believes there are other elements available during a street fight that can hurt you more.
