Joe Rogan recently hosted Michael Easter, a health and fitness professor and author, on JRE’s #2039 podcast. The duo spoke on a plethora of topics. But one particularly intriguing discussion stole some of the spotlight.
Easter initiated the discussion, pondering why humans struggle to moderate their behaviors. He highlighted, “The question is, ‘Okay, well – then, why the hell can’t we moderate?’ People keep eating when they’re full. They keep buying stuff… Even stuff like how much media we consume – it’s like, people will scroll and scroll…“
The outspoken Rogan couldn’t contain himself at this question. He shared his own experience, saying, “Oh – I have spent so many nights where I went to bed at 3 o’clock in the morning feeling like a f***ing idiot! Like, what did I do? I just wasted time watching dumb videos and reading dumb websites…”
Moreover, he continued, expressing his frustration, “I’m tired! I [should] just go to bed! But [it’s like] the next thing’s gonna really excite me. Maybe the next video is going to really stimulate me. Nope – always the same feeling! I go to bed [feeling] like a f***ing idiot! [I] Should’ve been in bed three hours ago!”
A slot machine analogy that intrigued Rogan
To illustrate the addictive nature of such habits, Easter drew a parallel with slot machines in Las Vegas. He described how these machines are omnipresent in the city. Elaborating on his thoughts, Easter added,

“I live in Las Vegas… Now, when you live there – you see all kinds of wild stuff! But to me – what’s always been the strangest is the slot machines. So, you’ve spent time in Vegas. It’s like – they’re in the casinos – obviously. But they’re [also] in the gas stations, the grocery stores, the restaurants, the bars, and the airport. And they’re not sitting empty… so I’m like – ‘What the hell is up with that?’”
What puzzles Easter is that these slot machines are never sitting idle, sparking an unusual curiosity about their appeal. And how could the JRE host just sit back? Rogan chimed in, explaining, “It plays on your dopamine! It’s like a numbing thing. You just sit there and press the buttons and hope they make money.”
